Join us this August for an exciting morning of moth discovery at Box Moor Trust! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ”

We'll be opening our moth traps from the previous night to see what fascinating species have been attracted. You'll have the opportunity to get hands-on with moth identification ๐Ÿฆ‹, learn about their remarkable life cycles and behaviours ๐ŸŒฑ, and see some beautiful species up close. ๐Ÿ‘€โœจ

One species you might encounter is the stunning Elephant Hawk-moth ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’š, one of the UK's most colourful and spectacular moths.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "It was great, I really enjoyed it. I learnt a lot and got to hold some moths that I didn't know existed, up close and personal."
โ€” Jess, participant from a previous session

Come along and discover the hidden world of moths with usโ€”we never know what the traps will reveal! ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿฆ‹โœจ๐ŸŒฟ

โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ’™ Volunteers' Week 2026: Working for Our Rivers ๐Ÿ’™โ˜€๏ธ
This week, we are celebrating our volunteers, who enjoyed some glorious sunshine while carrying out important river restoration work at Harding's Moorโ€”although it got a little warm in those waders!
Our mission was to replace and extend vital riverbank protection by securing hazel bundles along the bank to help prevent erosion. The original bundles, installed a few years ago, had begun to deteriorate, and additional sections of the riverbank needed protection.
This is just one of many sites where we'll be carrying out similar work in the coming months to help improve and protect our rivers.
A huge thank you to our volunteers, who gave their time and energy to get this work completed in the heat. Your support makes a real difference. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’ง
This work has been made possible by funding from Affinity Water's Rooting for Nature grant programme. Special thanks to Affinity Water's grant programme for supporting this work

๐Ÿฆ‹ Mini Beasts Spotlight: Moths ๐Ÿฆ‹

This week we're learning about moths and how we can help protect them for future generations.

Our volunteers and staff recently joined an Introduction to Moths session led by Trustee David Kirk. After setting moth traps overnight, we discovered a variety of species and learned more about their fascinating lives and the important role they play in our ecosystems.

Box Moor Trust is seeking a Livestock Ranger
Full time, permanent
Hemel Hempstead, Herts
If you love working outdoors, care deeply about animal welfare and conservation, and want a role where no two days are the same, this could be for you. As a Livestock Ranger, youโ€™ll get stuck into hands-on conservation grazing, looking after Belted Galloway cattle, Norfolk Horn sheep and Old English goats, while helping manage a beautifully varied estate. Youโ€™ll be part of the day-to-day action (checking livestock, supporting breeding programmes, maintaining habitats, and carrying out practical estate work) while also being a friendly, knowledgeable face for visitors and volunteers.

๐ŸŒฟ May at the Trust โ€“ Social Media Round-Up ๐ŸŒฟ

What a wonderfully busy and wildlife-filled month May has been!

๐Ÿ’ง Our Youth Rangers took part in a River Fly Survey this month, learning how these important surveys help monitor river health and detect changes in water quality. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, River Fly surveys have been carried out across 5 sites for many years, building up valuable data about the river over time.

๐Ÿฆ† Our Mini Rangers had a fantastic time pond dipping, discovering all sorts of fascinating pond creatures while learning about the life cycles of dragonflies and newts.

๐Ÿฆ Exciting news on the reserve โ€” our brand new tern raft already has a mating pair of terns making themselves at home! Weโ€™re looking forward to seeing what happens next.

๐ŸŒฑ A huge thank you to our hardworking volunteers at Pixieโ€™s Mere, who have been carrying out brilliant restoration work to help repair the eroded river banks.

๐Ÿชถ Over on the kestrel we**am, the chicks are growing fast and getting ready to fledge โ€” an exciting milestone to watch unfold!

๐Ÿ’š We also received a lovely thank you from a Brownie group who joined us for a fun evening pond dipping session at the Old Barn. Weโ€™re so pleased they enjoyed their visit.

โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ And finallyโ€ฆ can we talk about the weather?! May has certainly kept us guessing with some of the strangest weather yet!

Thank you to everyone who has joined, volunteered, visited, supported, and followed along this month. Hereโ€™s to a busy and beautiful June ahead! ๐ŸŒผ

๐Ÿฆ Helping Wildlife the Right Way ๐Ÿฆ

We recently had some young Song Thrush chicks brought to the Box Moor Trust by a concerned member of the public. While it always comes from a place of kindness, weโ€™d like to remind everyone that we are not a wildlife hospital and are unable to treat injured or abandoned animals.

If you ever find wildlife you are worried about, please contact a specialist wildlife rescue such as Tiggywinkles, where trained experts can provide the proper care animals may need.

In this case, these small chicks were fledglings โ€” young birds that naturally leave the nest before they can fully fly. Although they may look vulnerable, their parents are usually close by and still feeding and protecting them. Unless they are clearly injured or in immediate danger, itโ€™s often best to leave them where they are.

Thank you for caring about our local wildlife and helping us spread awareness about the best ways to protect it ๐Ÿ’š
