– Did you know there’s a hidden meaning behind the Scout symbol? ⚜️

The iconic Scout emblem - the fleur-de-lis - might look decorative, but it actually has a practical origin.

When Scouting began, Baden-Powell chose a symbol based on the arrowhead used on maps and compasses to point north, representing direction and guidance.

He explained that just like a compass shows the way, a Scout shows the right path through their actions and values. Over time, the symbol became known as the fleur-de-lis - a stylised lily - also representing peace and purity.

Even today, the design still carries meaning:
• The three points remind Scouts of their Promise
• The symbol as a whole continues to represent guidance, direction and doing the right thing

So next time you see ⚜️, remember - it’s not just a badge.

It’s a reminder to find your direction and help others along the way.

- Did you know Scouting has continued to evolve, becoming more inclusive along the way? ⚜️🌈

Scouting has always been about helping young people grow in confidence, develop skills for life, and make a positive difference in their communities. But like many organisations founded more than a century ago, the movement has evolved alongside society 💚

For much of history, LGBTQIA+ people faced significant barriers to being open about who they were. As understanding and acceptance have grown, so too has Scouting’s commitment to ensuring that everyone feels welcome, respected, and able to participate fully.

Today, guided by our values of integrity, respect, care, belief, and cooperation, we continue to build an inclusive movement where LGBTQIA+ young people and volunteers can:

🌈 Be themselves
🤝 Feel a sense of belonging
🚀 Thrive and grow

Recognising our history helps us appreciate how far we’ve come and reminds us of the importance of creating a future where every person is welcomed, valued, and supported.

1st Renton Beavers had a fantastic evening visiting the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Dumbarton Station 🚒

The Beavers had a great time learning all about the vital work our local firefighters do and they even got a chance at using a fire hose!

This week 1st Helensburgh Beavers completed the final part of their Community Impact badge! They were delighted to welcome one of the local Food Bank volunteers, Pat, who shared how it all works and the incredible support it provides within the community. Thank you to all the Beavers & their families who donated towards the food bank.

The Beavers have also been working hard on a range of activities as part of the badge - from litter picking and making seed bombs to creating a welcoming space for everyone, including their new Beaver Box for wellbeing and support. 🌍

- Did you know our Scout volunteers end up learning way more skills than they ever signed up for? 👀⚜️

We’re talking things like fire lighting, first aid, navigation, knot tying…and somehow also becoming an expert in crowd control, snack distribution, and organising chaos 😂

But behind the scenes, volunteers also build skills like:
🧠 Leadership & team building
📋 Event planning (from weekly meetings to full camps)
⚠️ Risk assessment and running activities safely
🧩 Safeguarding and creating inclusive spaces
💸 Budgeting and keeping things running smoothly

No one joins Scouting knowing how to do it all - that’s kind of the point. You learn as you go, have a laugh along the way, and end up picking up skills you never expected. That’s what makes volunteering in Scouting so different 💚

It’s not just giving your time - it’s gaining something back too.

So for Volunteers’ Week, here’s your fun fact:
👉 You don’t need the skills to volunteer in Scouting…you get them because you volunteer.
