It's May Day bank holiday this weekend, a celebration of the coming of springtime. Associated most with maypole dancing, we have an image here from the Pennine Heritage Digital Archive of the Birchcliffe maypole dancers in 1894.

It's also a holiday that has become associated with parades and marches, as we see in the image from Market Street. In different ways we can see communities coming together. Hope you all have a great May Day bank holiday weekend!

Last week we held a small ceremony to inaugurate the David Fletcher Hall, named in honour of one of our founders, David Fletcher.

Alongside David Shutt and David Ellis, David Fletcher helped to save the Birchcliffe Centre before forming Pennine Heritage, which became an official charity in 1979. Over the next 40+ years, David worked to continue preserving and celebrating the history and heritage of the local area as chair of Pennine Heritage until 2015 and then as President until last year.

The plaque was designed and written to mirror a plaque from the Birchcliffe Chapel that celebrates the names of those who played a key role in the running of the chapel. There's no more fitting way to mark David's contribution and legacy to our home and charity. Thanks to local craftspeople and for their excellent work!

This week we've installed our new defibrillator! Working with our friends at IOU Creation Centre and thanks to funding from the Hebden Bridge Rotary Club, we now have a registered defib machine sited next to the doors to our main hall and near the entrance to IOU Hostel.

This is a community asset - while we hope it won't be needed, it's there for the entire community to use in an emergency, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Instructions on what to do are helpfully right on the front of the box.

Join us on Tuesday 14th April for a workshop on the drought of 1976 with Nathalie Holloway, a PhD student from the University of Hull. Nathalie will be guiding participants through newspaper articles and other archival materials to explore what drought means for uses of water and what we might do over the short and long term to cope with drought.

Come along if you're interested in the history of water in our area and how we can use the past to think about the future. Email [email protected] to find out more!

Birchcliffe Centre, Tuesday 14th April, 12:30pm-2pm.
