What used to be a dense patch of Himalayan Balsam back in 2018 is now a diverse mix of Bluebells, Red Campion, and Buttercups following several years of treatment, hand pulling the Balsam between June and July before it went to seed. Nothing else was done to encourage these lovely native wildflowers, which are now thriving instead.

Wouldn't it be nice if the Environment Agency planted this strip in Mytholmroyd with heat tolerant wildflowers instead of small non native bushes and grasses?

This is 2nd time it got sprayed with weedkiller, doesn't look very neatly at all.

The history of this spot is interesting, a few years ago we suggested wildflowers but it got planted with these sorts. Then it got covered in weeds, left to look ugly and dry, then sprayed again and replanted for the second time. It's paid with your money by the way, in one or other form of taxes.

And now we're back at it again, hot summer approaching, ground left dry and bare.

Why not just do it like the Hawks Cough wildflower site? 🤷‍♀️

This Rosa Rugosa, common hedgerow shrub, is a valuable resource of nectar for many pollinators.

Here you can see a solitary bee (left flower), honey bee and bumblebee (right flower) all feeding from the same resource.

Bumblebee is making the high pitch noise to stimulate the flower to give out nectar, not because it's annoyed by the competition of the honey bee 🐝
