Hebden Bridge Local History Society

Hebden Bridge Local History Society We are an enthusiastic society interested in understanding, exploring and making available our local history. Visitors may use the Archive on payment of £2.

The catalogue to our extensive archive and details of our activities are on the web pages - first stop for any local history enquiries. Between the months of September and March the Society runs a fortnightly lecture programme with talks on a wide variety of aspects of local history. These take place at the Methodist Church Hall in Hebden Bridge (opposite the Coop). The Society produces two newsle

tters each year which both preview and review the season’s lectures as well as updating members on relevant developments within the Society and the wider community. The Archive of the Society is housed in the Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge and is open to members on the second Wednesday afternoon and fourth Saturday morning of each month. The Archive holds a wealth of both published and unpublished material on the local area, much of which is unique. A Family History Section exists for those who are particularly interested in finding out more about their family past while those who wish to dig very deep back into the past are catered for by the Prehistory Section. In addition, many members have particular knowledge of different aspects of local history, ranging from the medieval period to the industrial revolution. The Society has published a number of books and other publications on the history of the area. These range from photographic essays on the history of Hebden Bridge to general histories of the Upper Calder Valley to town trails.

BIG BOG weekend 25/26 April includes a talk by Paul Knights about the themes behind his poem A Ground That Remembers, reflecting on the long history of peatlands and the communities who relied on them for fuel. Drawing on historical research, he explores how the moor itself preserves the memory of natural processes and environmental change, and the complex story of our ancestors’ relationship with peat.

- Watch inspiring films at the WaterLANDS Bog Film Fest, introduced by Josh Cohen (University of Leeds) and chat to the directors about their films and inspirations.
