Slow The Flow

Slow The Flow Over Christmas and Boxing Day 2015, Pennine areas in the North of England had over 60mm of rain fall in 24 hours and some locations had over 100 mm.

Slow The Flow is a charity (Charity Reg: 1191174) working to advance the education of the public in Natural Flood Management, Sustainable Drainage Systems and other renewable methods of managing the environment. During this time, the Calder Valley suffered the most significant flooding event in recent times. 2,781 homes and 4,416 businesses were flooded all along the Calder Valley causing unparall

eled and significant damage. Recorded flooding events in the Calder Valley go back as far as 1615 so it is evident that some action needs to be taken to look at why this is happening. Slow The Flow was set up to look at the issue of why and how the Calder Valley floods and to look at natural flood prevention measures and solutions to slow the volume of water which comes down the hillsides into the River Calder.

Our Trustees at Slow The Flow are all volunteers and most of us also hold down very busy full time jobs while managing the incredible work our charity does.

We come from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds which makes us an experienced and dedicated group of people.

2026 is a hugely exciting year for us at Slow The Flow as we build capacity within our organisation to take our experience, knowledge and our 5 Key Messages around the UK.

Last night we celebrated 10 years of Slow The Flow. And what a night it was.

Ten years ago, in the wake of devastating floods, a small group of local people came together with a simple but powerful idea: that communities could take action to reduce flood risk using natural, practical solutions.

A decade later, that idea has grown into a movement.

From our founding members who sparked the vision, to partners like the National Trust, to our MP, to the many friends, volunteers and advocates who have supported us along the way - last night was a celebration of everyone who has helped make Slow The Flow what it is today.

Together we have:
🌿 Installed hundreds of natural flood management measures
🌿 Worked with landowners, schools and community groups
🌿 Influenced conversations locally and nationally
🌿 Helped communities feel less powerless in the face of flooding

We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved.

But this isn’t the end of the story.

The challenges of flooding and climate change remain urgent - and so does our mission. The next 10 years will be about scaling up, reaching more communities, building new partnerships and continuing to prove that nature-based solutions work.

To everyone who has supported us over the past decade - thank you.

Here’s to the next chapter. 🌊🌿

Slow The Flow were proud to be involved at the first Hebden Royd Green Network Meeting. As Slow The Flow approaches our 10 year anniversary, it is important for us to get back to our "roots" so to speak and understand what the local climate related issues and opportunities are in the local wards. It was great meeting everyone!
