Volunteers make such a difference at Sense Ability Matters, and Andrew’s story is a brilliant example of the impact volunteering can have.

Andrew began volunteering with SAM in April 2023 as an admin volunteer. Andrew’s role has involved inputting information onto SAM’s database and helping to keep important information up to date. Over the past 3 years Andrew has been able to develop his admin skills and gained a lot of confidence. As well as his main admin role, Andrew has enthusiastically contributed his other skills, including using his voice over talents to create a video about volunteering for SAM’s social media page.

We are very proud of how Andrew has developed in his role and are delighted that he now feels ready to seek employment with the experience he has gained.

Andrew says "Having a visual impairment and having struggled to find paid work post-pandemic, I know how difficult many simple challenges can be day-to-day for those with sight loss of any kind."

However, this hasn't stopped Andrew from pursuing his interests and working to his strengths.

Andrew feels that his volunteering experience has been of enormous help to his confidence and progression as a person. "Without it, as a previously very shy person, I could neverhave successfully gone into Voice Over work, and less still writing and acting as hobbies. The encouragement of fellow volunteers, plus the voluntary work itself that I've done, have improved my telephone and communication skills no end".

Thank you to Andrew and all of SAM’s fantastic volunteers for their hard work and contributions.

“I couldn’t cope.”

When Lisa first contacted Sense Ability Matters, she was overwhelmed by the effects of sight loss on her everyday life. Even familiar surroundings became difficult to navigate, and her confidence to leave the house was fading. Through our Enablement Service, we listened and together, we found solutions.

Anti-glare glasses to improve visibility
Hand magnifiers for reading
An anti-glare app to reduce phone screen strain
Support with her PIP application
And the encouragement to try new things, like our vision-impaired exercise classes

Lisa told us the difference was life-changing - “I feel like I’m finally starting to be myself again.”

She’s more confident, connected, and able to manage her day with independence and pride.

As part of National Share a Story Month, we’re encouraging people to share their experiences of hearing loss, sight loss and accessing support.

This is a testimonial from a SAM service user, sharing the difference the right support can make:

“It’s absolutely brilliant… the kindness, the support, the laughter.”

By listening to real experiences, we can better understand what people need and continue to build services that support independence, confidence and wellbeing.

If you feel comfortable sharing your story, we’d love to hear from you. Your experience can help shape support for others.
