Hawick Active Schools Now in 2016, the Active Schools Network is a team of people working within the school and the wider community in Scotland.

Active Schools works with schools and communities to ensure all children and young people are given the motivation and opportunities to ‘get active’ and stay active The origins of Active Schools can be found in two sportscotland initiatives which were put in place in the 1990s, both designed to help get Scotland’s pupils more active; the School Sport Coordinator Programme and The Active Primary School Pilot Programme. Together our goal is to offer all children and young people the motivation and opportunities to ‘get active’ ensuring there are more and higher quality opportunities for all children to participate in sport within schools and to increase capacity through the recruitment of a network of volunteers, who in turn deliver activity sessions in schools. In practice, this means that our job is to increase the number of opportunities for all children to get engaged in sport and also try to build bridges with sports clubs and other community organisations to give pupils a ‘pathway’ to continue their participation in sport outside of the school gates.

October Moments:

The Summer of Sport supported the SBC Active Communities team to provide additional, accessible sport and physical activity opportunities for children and young people during the summer holidays, with a particular focus on removing barriers and helping more families access opportunities within their local communities.

Not only did the Summer of Sport provide hundreds of accessible opportunities, it also demonstrated the importance of local, affordable and well-supported provision. Crucially, feedback suggests the programme did more than keep children and young people active during the holidays, it encouraged them to participate beyond the summer.

Going forward, Summer of Sport (Game On) grants are still open to support local sports clubs to reduce barriers to access and to increase membership and participation.

This year, Ellie is also one of our Fit for Girls ambassadors. It’s fantastic to see her setting such a positive example for girls across the Hawick community. 👍
