Pembrokeshire Young Carers

Pembrokeshire Young Carers A page to keep up to date with the Pembrokeshire Young Carers Project.

Young carers provide care to a parent or guardian, grandparent or extended family member with a disability, long term illness or mental health issues. The Action for Children young carers service in Pembrokeshire identifies and supports the growing number of children and young people from eight to 25 who are responsible for caring for a loved one. The service supports the young carers and enables

them to have a life outside of their caring role. The service aims to:
• identify young carers throughout Ceredigion
• support young carers to have positive lifestyle
• raise the profile of young carers throughout Ceredigion
• reduce exclusion and isolation, which can be inherent in caring
• provide activities so young carers develop skills and links with each other and can participate more in youth activities
• provide residential activities so young carers have short overnight breaks from their caring responsibilities and just have fun.

Our last trip with the Pembrokeshire Young Carers Project ❤️

As we come to the end of 12 wonderful years, it feels very special to spend our penultimate day together at Llandysul Paddlers Canoe Centre and Club. It’s been a privilege to work alongside such incredible young people — we’re so proud of everything that those we've supported over the years have achieved and the resilience they show every day. We wish them all the very best for the future.

A huge thank you to Y Bartneriaeth Awyr Agored - The Outdoor Partnership for today’s activity and for their continued support over the years — it’s meant so much. We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of the staff and organisations who have worked with us to support young carers over the years ❤️

We’re looking forward to seeing those who’ve booked on to our Family Fun Day at Heatherton tomorrow!

What a fantastic day celebrating culture, community and new experiences! 🎉

Our Pembrokeshire Young Carers group recently visited the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea for the Spring Festival, part of the Chinese New Year celebrations. As we welcome the Year of the Horse — a symbol of energy, strength and perseverance — it felt especially meaningful to spend the day learning about traditions from across the world and embracing new experiences together.

We tried on traditional clothing and enjoyed a storytelling session about the legend of the Nian Monster. The live performances were a real highlight, with incredible musicians, singers, kung fu demonstrations and a beautiful dragon ribbon dance. Our absolute favourite was the lion dance, which had everyone smiling!

After the festival, we headed to Gigi Gao's, where we were treated to an amazing Chinese meal — dish after delicious dish just kept arriving! We had the opportunity to chat with Gigi and her wonderful team, who kindly taught us some Chinese words and generously gifted each young person a special gift bag to remember the day.

Experiences like this are a great reminder of the importance of learning about different cultures and celebrating diversity. A truly memorable day, filled with laughter, learning and lots of fantastic food! 🐉✨

PRESS RELEASE: Meghan Attends National Gala Celebrating the Vital Role of Young Carers

Meghan Smyth, an A-level student from Pembrokeshire College and devoted young carer for her disabled sister Mia, recently attended the Action for Children Young Carers’ Gala in London, a celebration of young people who care for loved ones.

Having balanced her education with responsibilities at home from a young age, she took to the stage at the Gala to perform live with a band. Her story was also featured in an emotional short film shown to hundreds of guests at the Gala, an unforgettable moment.

“Watching my video play at the Gala, I found myself looking around, wondering if I was being judged. Instead, I saw genuine warmth on everyone’s faces, in that moment I realised that I wasn’t being judged but rather being supported. It truly felt like a dream,” Meghan said.

During the event, Meghan also had the chance to meet celebrities and supporters of the charity, including singer Alexandra Burke, who praised the courage and resilience of young carers across the UK.

Following the Gala, Meghan received a personal invitation from the Princess of Wales to attend a special carol service at Buckingham Palace. This gesture highlights the importance of recognising and uplifting young carers who often go unseen.

Action for Children representatives have praised Meghan for her dedication, talent and the powerful way she shares her lived experience to inspire others.

The charity’s Young Carers’ Gala aims to spotlight young carers across the UK who juggle education, work and caring responsibilities every day, often without recognition.

For Meghan, the night marked more than a celebration, it was a moment of validation, pride and hope for the future.

💙 A Huge Thank You to Rotary Club of Milford Haven 💙

We are so grateful to Milford Haven Rotary Club for once again giving our young carers a fantastic treat – an evening of pizza and bowling!

It was wonderful to see so many smiles, some impressive bowling skills and lots of laughter throughout the night. Each young carer was even given a little treat to go home with! ☺️

These experiences mean so much to the young people we support, offering them a chance to relax, have fun and make special memories together.

Milford Haven Rotary Club - Your continued support makes a real difference, and we can’t thank you enough for your generosity and kindness.

🎄 Festive fun with our amazing young carers! 🎄

We celebrated the festive season with not one, but two Christmas dinners—one for some of our younger carers and one for some of our teen young carers. Both nights were filled with delicious three-course meals, laughter with friends and plenty of festive cheer.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made these evenings so special. 💙

🎅✨ Our Secret Santa appeal is Back! ✨🎅

Christmas sheould be full of joy, gifts, and festive treats. But for too many children, it’s just another day… no presents, no special food — sometimes no food at all.

At Action for Children, we’re determined to change that. ❤️

You could help bring the magic of Christmas to a child who really needs it. Please donate and share this appeal with your friends and family. Together, we could make sure vulnerable children and families across the UK feel the warmth of the season.

At Pembrokeshire Young Carers Project, we’ve seen first-hand just how much these donations can mean. The support we receive helps brighten Christmas for families who are facing incredibly tough circumstances, offering not only practical help but a little bit of festive magic when it’s needed most. We would be truly grateful for any donation — big or small — to help us make Christmas special for the families we work with at Action for Children.

🎄 Fun, Friendship & Festive Creativity at Pembrokeshire Young Carers! 🎄

Over the past couple of weeks, our young carers have enjoyed two fantastic group sessions filled with laughter, creativity and connection. 💛

✨ What have we been up to?

- Playing fun balloon games with new friends 🎈
- Getting creative with Christmas crafts – designing baubles, cards and paper wreaths 🎨
- Staying active with basketball and table tennis 🏀🏓
- Relaxing with board games, wordsearches and mindfulness colouring 🧩🖍

It’s been great to see everyone choose activities that suit them, whether it’s high-energy fun or calming moments.

Our staff team have also been busy! Alongside regular 1:1 sessions, school drop-ins and group activities, we’ve:

- Connected with secondary and primary school Family Engagement Officers at the Pembrokeshire FEO Network meeting to strengthen support for young carers in schools.
- Attended the Unpaid Carers Event Day at Wolfscastle Country Spa Hotel & Restaurant and Carers Rights Day Coffee Morning at Hubberston and Hakin Community Centre – great opportunities to share what we do and link up with other professionals supporting carers.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make these sessions so special. 💫
