Return to Dust is a Chinese film telling the story of humble, unassuming Ma and timid Cao who have been cast off by their families and forced into an arranged marriage. To survive, they have to come together and build a home for themselves.
This will be the third time of trying to show this film: the first time there were technical problems, the second time there was snow, so third time lucky!
Showing at 7.30pm on Tuesday March 17th with a pop-up bar in the foyer from 6.45pm.

Some people came expecting to see The Choral but stayed for The Ballad of Wallis Island which scored 86.54%.
The sound was once again a problem with Tom Basden’s character Herb McGwyther particularly difficult to understand. Here are the comments

Scoring A

Charming
Delightfully quirky with splendid lead performances.
Funny but sad.
Thoroughly enjoyable - ‘Charles’ absolutely made it.
Thought this was great. Warm and beautiful.
Photography excellent. Great cast.

Scoring B

Sweet film - unfortunately did not get all the dialogue/lyrics without subtitles. ceiling light also distracting.
Offbeat, good photography
Entertaining, beautifully acted and directed. Poor sound reproduction

Scoring C
The distorted sound spoiled what seemed a promising film. I like the story line and the characters were interesting but the sound! Grr!

Our programme showed The Choral as our choice for Tuesday March 10th but we could not obtain a distribution licence for it so instead we have the unexpected treat of The Ballad of Wallis Island. A British comedy drama about an eccentric lottery winner who lives alone on a remote island and tries to make his fantasies come true by getting his favourite musicians to perform at his home. Filmed in South West Wales, some of it on Ramsey Island, it stars Carey Mulligan, Tim Key and Tom Basden.
Pop-up bar as usual from 6.45pm, film starts at 7.30pm

No other Land was always going to be a difficult watch but it became even more difficult when the sound system was so muted that we watched an almost silent film. Fiona, our tech person was away and her replacement failed to correct the problem. It scored 82.69%, here are the comments.

Scoring A

Hard to judge when the technical problems were so disappointing.
Important documentary. Incredible strength and resilience of Palestinians facing daily injustice.
This filming was amazing. Thank you again for your choice.
Amazing for an amateur cameraman with a small camera.
The world can be really depressing at the moment.
A brave film to make about a dreadful situation where western reporters are blocked by Israel.
Powerful and shows Israel is clearly in the wrong.
Certainly an indictment of the Israeli occupation. Found the dazzling (ground) shots hard to watch.

Scoring B
B because of the sound. A powerful reminder of the illegal occupation, if one were needed. Lack of sound makes it difficult to watch. Everyone should see this.

It was the speakers. This is how it should have sounded.
But in a way, it was fitting - the Palaestinians not having a voice that can be heard.

Smiling faces exiting the theatre after “Midnight in Paris” said it all. Woody Allen’s whimsical romantic comedy didn’t disappoint and scored 98.07%. Here are the comments

Scoring A

That was great fun
What a delight
C’est perfect!
A delightful amusing film based on an interesting plot idea. Echoes of Woody Allen throughout the dialogue. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.
Really entertaining. A film that saw the future : “cryptofascist airhead zombies”
A very enjoyable conceit.
Very feelgood film.
Woody Allen’s only sight gag - the battle of the rhinoplasties. (P.S. Carol didn’t take the lens cap off in Versailles.)
I love this film. I miss Woody Allen.
This really took me away. Such reality underneath.

Scoring B

Small Things like These may have been “sobering” and “harrowing “ but scored 95.45%. Here are the comments

Scoring A

Sobering
A grim reminder of how cruel people and institutions can be, especially when ignored.
Harrowing. Hypocrisy. Beautifully portrayed.
Superb film.
Poignant
The dialogue was sparse and excellent. The director filled in the blanks superbly.
What a tortured soul and how well the film dealt with stain on Ireland's history. Beautifully acted too.
A study in Christian values perverted.

Scoring B

Could have been less drawn out.
