Final Straw Foundation

Final Straw Foundation An environmental charity encouraging communities, businesses and individuals to protect our oceans. Welcome to the Final Straw Foundation!

We are a registered UK charity (no. 1191500) working with local communities and businesses to highlight the impact of plastic pollution on our environment and to try to minimise the amount of plastic entering our local seas and wider oceans. We started in Emsworth, Hampshire in 2018 as a group of volunteers giving our time to help clean up our local community spaces and, in time, the surrounding a

reas. We were a non-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) from June 2018 through to September 2020, at which point we gained our charity registration and became the Final Straw Foundation CIO. We work with many different types of business on sustainability and helping them find ethical and sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic in their activities. We have a very busy school outreach programme and have reached thousands of children in the Solent area through assemblies and workshops. We work with community groups, giving talks and running activities and encouraging people to avoid single-use plastic and how to best dispose of it if they do need to use it. We still run regular beach and community cleans as it is a great way to get back in touch with nature, with benefits that include the obvious clear-up of litter, but also meeting like-minded people and getting some often well-needed head space and connection with nature.

April & May Results

We want everyone to enjoy our beautiful coastline safely, which is why we’re sharing our latest water testing insights for Emsworth Harbour.

The Good News (April): We are pleased to report that we detected no high concentrations of E. coli throughout the entire month of April! 🎉

The Update (May): Our testing did pick up two days of high E. coli concentrations on May 3rd and 4th🚨

A note on our alerts:

Because accurate water testing requires a processing window, our team verified these results 24 hours after the sampling dates. As soon as the data was confirmed, we bypassed social media delays to immediately notify the local Sailing Clubs and the Environment Agency directly so they could inform water users on the ground.

Moving forward, we are streamlining our review process to get these critical alerts onto our social channels as close to real-time as scientifically possible.

🌊 Happy World Ocean Day! 🌍

It might be World Ocean Day today, but our incredible community got a head start yesterday!

For Great Big Green Week, we teamed up with and the Brook Meadow Conservation Group for an epic cleanup of the River Ems chalk stream.

The results speak for themselves, In just 3 hours, 15 absolute volunteer heroes collected a massive 91.90 kg of rubbish! 💥

The "Haul" Included:
45 plastic bottles & 54 glass bottles
75 aluminium cans
15 lost dog toys
1 car bumper, 1 household door, & a large gas canister
1 kettle, birthday party debris, and a bag of USED nappies.🥴

Why cleaning a local stream matters for our Oceans:

Did you know that roughly 85% of global marine plastic pollution starts inland, flowing directly down rivers and into our seas?

The River Ems is a rare and precious chalk stream habitat, a unique global environment. The Brook Meadow Nature Reserve is a designated Local Nature Reserve and Wildlife Site, home to legally protected kingfishers and our beloved water voles (Britain’s fastest-declining mammal).

By stopping this 91.90 kg of waste at Brook Meadow, our volunteers didn't just clean a river bank. They protected a fragile ecosystem and stopped a massive wave of plastic pollution before it ever had the chance to reach the ocean.

👏🏻A massive thank you to everyone who spent their Sunday wading in to protect our blue planet.

Want to get involved next time?

We are always looking for beach clean leaders as well as volunteers, please email [email protected] for more information

60KG of rubbish gone in just 2 hours! 😮💥

We might be a little late to the party in posting this, but we are still amazed from last Thursday’s beach clean at the Ferry Boat Inn, Hayling Island!

On one of the hottest days of the year, 45 incredible volunteers showed up, rolled up their sleeves ( T-shirts ) , and protected our beautiful coastline.

Thank you so much to everyone who braved the heat to keep Hayling Island beautiful. ☀️💙

The sunshine brings out the crowds, which we love to see…but let’s keep our beaches pristine. Next time you head down for a sunny day by the sea, please remember to take your rubbish home with you! 🗑️✨

Happy World Environment Day! 🌍💚✨

What better way to celebrate than by taking direct action for our planet?

This morning, an incredible crew of 20 eco-heroes met us down at Warsash Beach. In just two short hours, they cleared a massive 44kg of rubbish and plastic pollution from the shoreline!

Swipe through to see our amazing volunteers making waves for marine life!

A giant thank you to everyone who kicked off their Friday by helping us protect the South Coast.

We love our community! 🌊💙

If you’re out enjoying the coast or the sunshine over the weekend, let’s keep the World Environment Day spirit alive, please help our oceans by leaving only footprints and taking your rubbish home. 🚮🍃

We want to introduce you to an absolute pillar of the Final Straw Foundation community.

Meet Ian!

Ian has been lending his time, energy, and hands-on skills to FSF since the very beginning. He is the definition of a dependable unsung hero, quietly working hard in the background of so many of our major milestones.

Most recently, Ian stepped up to be our vital Water Safety Lead at the Paddle Out protest, ensuring everyone stayed safe while making our voices heard on the water.

On top of that, he has built countless oyster baskets for our restoration project last year and so much more!

Without the unwavering commitment of volunteers like Ian, we simply could not achieve what we do today.

Ian, this is a small way for us to say a massive, heartfelt THANK YOU for everything you do.

We are incredibly lucky to have you on the team!

Better late than never! 🤫

Let’s talk about a very special beach clean... ☀️🏖️

We’ve been so busy on the ground lately that we’re a little late posting this, but we just have to give a huge shout-out to boxChilli Digital Marketing

Two weeks ago, we spent a gorgeous, sunny afternoon (a bit different than todays rain!) cleaning up Eastoke Beach at Hayling Island. ♻️

They chose to work with us as part of their amazing '20 Acts for 20 Years' initiative to celebrate two decades of business.

Talk about celebrating with purpose! 🎉

With plenty of sunshine and brilliant teamwork, they helped us clear 13.3kg of rubbish that would have otherwise ended up in our oceans.

Thank you so much for choosing to support the Final Straw Foundation as part of your anniversary celebrations, and happy 20th birthday from all of us!
🎂🥳

Happy Volunteers’ Week!

Our volunteers give so much to our organisation, and the simple truth is, without them, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

To every one of you, Thank you. 🌊✨

You are the hands that pull plastic from our shorelines, the dedication behind our daily citizen science water testing and the energy cleaning our Solent oysters.

Whether you’ve been with us for years or just joined us at a recent beach clean, your graft, passion, and willingness to step away from your "to-do" lists to protect our ecosystem is inspiring.

You don't just show up for our charity; you show up for the future of our oceans.

We are endlessly proud of the community we’ve built together.

You are the true driving force behind the change we are creating.

It’s been a long hot weekend and the beach has been busy. That’s where we’d like to spend it anyway.
However, this mornings beach clean did not delight.
Please take your rubbish home with you. It’s just not that hard and it’s not ok. Grr.
A huge thank you to the team at Portsmouth Grammar School today. 23 teachers helped removed 132kg of waste from eastney beach.

Keep Pompey clean.
Don’t be a and bin your rubbish
