Leaving care can be a challenging step towards independence, and too many young people face housing insecurity as they make that transition. 🏠

At Herts Young Homeless, our Outreach Service works with care-experienced young people across Hertfordshire, helping them build life skills, access housing support, and get the practical and emotional guidance they need.

The experiences shared in the article are a reminder that, while many dedicated professionals are working hard to support young people, more investment and joined-up support is needed nationally to ensure every care-experienced young person has the opportunity to thrive.

No young person should have to face these challenges alone.

Just moved out? Here's something nobody tells you about living on your own...

After a long, hot, dry summer, sudden storms can lead to house leaks and flooding. If it happens, stay safe, take photos, protect important items, and contact your landlord or insurer as soon as you can.

You can find more information over on the Hertfordshire County Council page

Moments that build confidence, wellbeing and connection can start with something as simple as a walk in nature. 🌿

A huge thank you to Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust for leading a wellbeing walk around How Dell Woods & Stanborough Park for our team and our Future Roots Housemates.

Our young people had the opportunity to get creative with nature-inspired artwork, explore the local environment and spend time connecting with each other outdoors. The Trust also led a wellbeing walk for hyh staff, helping us discover more about local wildlife while taking a moment to slow down and recharge. πŸ’š

We welcome Andy Burnham's commitment to ending rough sleeping by Christmas and the national conversation it has sparked around homelessness. 🏠

While rough sleeping is the most visible form of homelessness, it's often just the tip of the iceberg. Nearly half of all adult rough sleepers first experienced homelessness before the age of 25, highlighting why early intervention and prevention are so important.

At Herts Young Homeless, we believe the long-term solution is to prevent homelessness before it happens.

Thank you Heart Hertfordshire for giving us the opportunity to share why preventing youth homelessness must be part of the solution.

We are delighted to have been selected to receive a grant to support our work to prevent youth homelessness as part of the Ending Homelessness in Communities Fund from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Our expert Outreach team will expand, helping to reduce the number of young adults aged 18-25 who are homeless in Hertfordshire.

This funding will enable us to support 60 additional young people each year through specialist support, including help to find and sustain suitable accommodation, develop independent living skills, manage finances and budgeting, access debt advice, and coordinate support with relevant agencies to ensure all their needs are met.

Through this support, we will break the devastating patterns of repeat homelessness and enable young people to move forward positively with their lives.

Thank you to Hertfordshire County Council and our local authority partners for their support in enabling us to secure this vital funding.
