Proudly supporting Forever Young People! 💜

Forever Young People are located at Hatfield Leisure Centre and they strive to be at the heart of their community. They aim to inspire individuals to feel valued, empowered, and confident in their abilities and to motivate individuals educationally, socially, and emotionally.

ARISE Hatfield provided funds for their project supporting young people with mental health issues living in Hatfield that are displaying self-destructive behaviours. Aimed predominately at teenagers, it will provide a programme designed to help reduce anxiety and self-destructive behaviours by building resilience and improving their physical and mental wellbeing, including building confidence, independence, health outcomes and social inclusion by meeting their specific needs.

Meet our ambassador Angela Gaughan from Potential Kids 👋

Potential Kids was founded by Angela, a mum to an autistic son who realised that there was a great need for projects like this.

She knows how hard it was to access activities for her son and wanted to make a difference by providing local support which encouraged and enabled our young people to learn, grow and achieve.

She is very proud to have some amazing volunteers, professionals and local organisations supporting her on this journey.

Proud to support Potential Kids' Sensory Garden 🌳

Potential Kids is an award-winning charity based in Hatfield which provides learning, social and sports opportunities to Neurodivergent children/young people (Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Tourette Syndrome amongst other conditions).

They applied to ARISE Hatfield for funding to enable them to create a sensory garden to support the mental, emotional, and physical needs of their neurodiverse Potential Kids community in Hatfield. The funding enabled them to purchase and build the willow tunnel, purchase paints and sealants to add colour and protect the recycled materials, garden edging, plants, pots, hardware and mulch etc.

By creating sensory play opportunities in the garden, the children/young people will learn and develop appropriate responses and reactions. The garden is their safe space for discovery and sensory play can be extremely soothing or awakening depending on the nature of the activity.

Meet our ambassador Carmen Dillon 👋

Carmen started her role at the WHCVS in May 1994 and her initial goal was to stay with the organisation for a year but many years later she is still there. Why? Because she liked the many challenges the organisation is presented with. Prior to joining WHCVS, Carmen worked for Age UK for four years, indicating her experience in the non-profit sector and her commitment to serving the community.

Carmen has been through the organisation’s ups and downs over the years, demonstrating her resilience and ability to navigate challenges. One of the biggest highlights was two large lottery grants in 2002 and 2003.

Proud to support Welwyn Garden City Hockey Club! 🏑

WGC Hockey Club are based, train and play at the University of Herts playing fields. Hockey is a fast-paced sport that allows young people to engage in physical exercise, in a friendly team environment, that develops social and leadership skills, plus self-confidence, so improving mental health. However, no schools within Hatfield play hockey - either girls or boys, due to a lack of facilities. At present they have 75 under 18's who attend development training, with around 45 attending each week, They have provided sessions for both Birchwood Avenue and DeHavilland primary schools.

The funds that ARISE Hatfield have provided will allow them to buy equipment so they can offer better training and development for more young people in the area. The equipment will enable them to invite more children from schools in Hatfield to the Sunday morning sessions to double the number able to attend from 45 to around 100. It will also enable them to provide hockey training to other schools in the area. They aim to involve at least two more schools in the 2024-25 season. They have already had preliminary discussions with Howe Dell school and Bishops Hatfield Girls School.
