Bridges to Opportunity 🌉

We’re proud to be implementing “Bridges to Opportunity,” a Cash for Work project supported by GIZ under the EPSI initiative, in partnership with the Duhok and Akre Directorate of Heritage and Antiquities.

For 40 days this August–October, we’re creating short-term jobs for 55 women and youth, host community members, refugees, and IDPs in Akre and Zawita, while restoring the heritage we all share:

🕊️ Restoring the Virgin Mary Church and the garden beside the Jewish Temple Bridge in Akre

🕌 Restoring Zawita’s old Mosque and its two adjacent streams

This project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

This , we’re celebrating the young people who make up our community; refugees, IDPs, and host community youth alike.

Different journeys. Different camps, classrooms, and hometowns. But the same hopes: to learn, to grow, to feel safe, and to build a future they choose for themselves.

From boxing gloves to coding classes, from school gardens to swimming lessons, this is what youth-centred support looks like at The Lotus Flower. 🌱

“Different Contexts, Common Aspirations” — the theme says it all.

Advancing Women, Peace & Security in Academia 🌸

Today, we launched a workshop bringing together academic staff from Duhok Centre, Zakho, Akre, Amedi, Barwarish, and Shekhan to explore UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) — its four pillars, and its localization through the Kurdistan National Action Plan (KNAP).

Together, participants examined the vital role academic institutions play in translating KNAP’s commitments into practice, and discussed practical ways to strengthen women’s participation and leadership within academia — building more inclusive spaces where women can lead and shape decisions that matter.

Change starts with the institutions shaping tomorrow’s leaders. 💜

Peace agreements, policies, budgets, decisions about the future, women belong in every one of those rooms. 💜

We welcomed senior women from government institutions for a workshop on UNSCR 1325 and the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.

Together, we looked at the Kurdistan Region’s National Action Plan and the part each institution plays in bringing it to life, because commitments on paper only matter when someone carries them into practice.

The women in this room are the ones doing that carrying.

Many told us the session was long overdue, and that they’re leaving with a clearer sense of what women’s leadership can look like inside their own institutions.

This project was implemented as part of SPACE. SPACE is funded by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Twelve years. On 3 August 2014, the Yazidi community’s world was torn apart. Today, thousands of families still live in tents that were never meant to become homes.

The Lotus Flower exists because of that day. Our founder, , survived genocide herself as a child under Saddam Hussein. She created this organisation as an answer to what was done to the Yazidis, one survivor’s response to another generation’s loss.

In this message, our Regional Director, speaks directly to survivors: we stand with you, we honour your pain, and we admire your strength.

Over the past decade, we have worked to ensure survivors are known not for the violence they endured, but for their leadership, their aspirations, and their futures; through safe spaces, counselling, education, and economic opportunity.

Our hope is simple: that Yazidi families can return home safely and live with dignity and that those who choose to stay can build a dignified life where they are.

Governments must rebuild Sinjar.

The international community must keep standing with Yazidis and ensure these crimes are never forgotten.

Donors must invest in long-term recovery, not only short-term relief.

“The Yazidi people have shown extraordinary strength. They deserve the chance to heal, rebuild, and thrive.” Said Vian, our Regional Director

We gathered to celebrate the incredible progress of some of our cohorts completing the English/Kurdish/Arabic language programmes at The Lotus Flower centre in Domiz-2 camp.

At The Lotus Flower, every programme is embedded with psychosocial support to help our participants heal from trauma and rebuild their confidence.

Here, our learners:
✨ Build literacy and language skills
✨ Participate in weekly handcraft sessions that address trauma and build resilience
✨ Engage in gender equality awareness and self-protection advocacy
✨ Form supportive peer networks in a safe, welcoming space

This holistic approach recognizes that our girls and women need integrated healing, mental health support, and community empowerment to rebuild their lives.

None of this would be possible without the generous partnership of (ALMT UK) and the Mac Bevan Charitable Trust. Thank you.

To our community: your resilience, courage, and commitment inspire us every day 🌟

Our General Protection (GP) project meeting

Our team came together for our GP project meeting; aligning on our goals, coordinating across every department, and planning the phase ahead.

Every department and position presented their role in the project, because real impact happens when each part of the team moves in the same direction. When our planning is sharper and our coordination is stronger, the support we deliver to the women and communities we serve becomes deeper and more meaningful.

We also made space for some team-building activities that brought great energy into the room 💜

Our General Protection project is implemented by us in collaboration with and funded by

Our WPS Centre brought together women, grassroots groups, NGOs, activists, and government partners for a capacity-building workshop on Women, Peace and Security, strengthening the skills to lead, advocate, and drive change in their communities.

Because change doesn’t start in big rooms far away. It starts here, with people who believe in each other and are ready to lead the way.
