Hastings Voluntary Lifeguards

Hastings Voluntary Lifeguards Voluntary Lifeguard Club running a variety of courses and providing safety cover for events.

The club meets on Friday evenings at Summerfields Leisure Centre, Hastings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The club provides training for all of the Royal Life Saving Society UK awards from Rookie (aged about 8 years) upwards. Pool and Beach Lifeguard courses feature regularly in our training programme. The Beach Lifeguard courses provide a focus for open water training together with boat handling, other o

pen water awards. National Water Safety Management Programme has also become very popular. The club is now established in it's new base at East Hastings Sea Angling Association, The Stade Hastings . We now provide beach activities in the summer season from the club's base. The move has provided new focus and enthusiasm and is an exiting turning point for the club as it can utilise the excellent facilities at the club. Our club has an enthusiastic group who cover a variety of open water events in the area including sea swims, triathlons, rowing regattas and safety in action for local school children. They also enter competitions and arrange local competitions run on club evenings. The club organises monthly community life support courses offered free of charge. The club also ensures through its club welfare officer that all Trainers have enhanced DBS checks.

Photos show Hastings Lifeguard members at Safety in Action last week. East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service organise this fantastic event for young people to learn, by student engagement, life skills. We represent the Club and deliver Water Safety education - so important living by the sea and this knowledge is critical as shown by the recent drowning tragedies. It also gives us an opportunity to promote our Club where they can learn more water safety skills and knowledge. Thank you to our members, ESFRS and Bohemia Road Fire Station for hosting the event.

Some photos from Bewl Triathlon today - what a fantastic day, despite the early start!! We provided safety cover for the 3 different swim distances. The event is growing in size each year and the setting is amazing. The team did a great job ensuring the safety of all swimmers and encouraging those who needed it. Well done to the organisers, participants and our team.

With warm weather forecast this weekend and into next week, more of us will enjoy spending time in, on, or around water, so it’s important to stay safe.

Almost half (47%) of UK accidental drownings happen between May and August, with higher risks during warmer weather.

Keep yourself and your family safe:
• Check for hazards, including depth, currents, tides, and hidden underwater objects.
• Stay together and swim in lifeguarded areas.

In an emergency:
• Call 999 immediately
• If you fall in or become tired, stay calm, float on your back, and call for help

So sad to hear that Bill Wicking has passed away. Bill supported Hastings Voluntary Lifeguards in so many ways over many many years, always a friendly face with kind words. We always valued Bill and Benny encouragement and enthusiasm for the Club. Photo is 2023 Carnival where he was wishing us well before the start. Thank you Bill.
