We are posting this on behalf of Travis Mains Marten and his family.
Hello Everyone. Its Trav. I don't very often write on Facebook and certainly wouldnât think about putting anything so raw and personal on the MR HSL page, but here we are. Once upon a time, I probably would have shared all of this without thinking twice, but right now I just need to get some of it out of my head before it tears a hole in my soul, and I also need to ask for your help and support.
I have lost my older brother. Although, if I'm being completely honest, in many ways I lost him a while ago.
Chris had struggled with alcoholism and his mental health for many years. Covid made things worse, and although there were good days, good periods and plenty of attempts to turn things around, alcohol slowly stole my brother from me, from our family, and from the people who loved him.
He went to rehab, tried again, fell down, got back up and tried again. He never stopped fighting, even when it became harder and harder to see a way forward.
But Chris was so much more than his addiction.
To me, he was my big brother. The man I hero-worshipped as a kid. I genuinely believed he could stand between two speeding cars and stop them both with nothing more than his pointing finger.
He was a worker, a joker, a pain in the arse, a friend, a son, a brother and, despite everything he went through, someone who was deeply loved.
I found Chris on Saturday morning.
I don't think I'll ever be able to properly explain what that moment felt like. I'm still struggling to believe that he's gone and, if I am honest, I donât ever think I will be able to forget what I saw on that day.
Like many families affected by addiction, ours is complicated. There is grief, anger, guilt, love, regret and an enormous amount of sadness. I have my own history with addiction and sobriety, and at times I had to step away from Chris to protect myself and my own family. I know that was necessary, but knowing that doesn't make losing him any easier.
Chris deserved better than the way his story ended.
And I want his funeral to be about Chris, not just about the illness that took so much from him.
We are raising funds to help cover the cost of his funeral and give him the farewell he deserves.
If you are able to donate, anything at all will help and will mean an enormous amount to our family at a time when we are struggling to process the loss. Please visit our gofundme to donate if you can. https://gofund.me/f09637fcb
If you can't donate, please don't feel that you need to.
Instead, I would ask you to do something just as valuable:
If you knew my brother then please, Tell us a story about Chris.
Share a photograph. Tell us something ridiculous he did. Tell us about a good time you had together. Tell us about the Chris you remember.
Because addiction does not get to be the only story we tell about my brother.
There was a lot more to him than that. So please help us remember the man underneath it all.
Rest in peace, Chrissun.
You were my big brother, my hero, my pain in the arse and someone I will love for the rest of my life. Rest easy, brother. I'll see you on the other side. While I live in pieces.
