🌿 Woodturners & Conservation: A Powerful Connection 🌿

Trees are more than just wood—they are living connectors, linking earth and sky, people and livelihoods, and art with nature. Woodturners, through their craft, hold a unique power to inspire conservation by respecting and honouring the source of their materials: our forests. 🌳✨

Dr. Nalini Nadkarni, a canopy ecologist and passionate woodturner, spoke at the AAW International Woodturning Symposium, sharing how woodturners can play a role in protecting forests—especially in the tropics, where deforestation threatens biodiversity and livelihoods.

RAIN is proud to collaborate with the American Association of Woodturners to empower Indigenous and traditional communities in Brazil to restore degraded land and protect precious tree species like Pernambuco (Brazilwood). 🌱🌏

🌱 Psychedelic therapy, mental health - and ecosystem health too?

Psychedelics are making their way into mainstream policy. At the European Parliament, RAIN joined a groundbreaking session on how these medicines can transform mental health.

But there’s another critical layer—our connection to the natural world. Indigenous communities have long used plant medicines as part of a deep relationship with their ecosystems.

🌍 As psychedelics become mainstream, will they help us heal not just our minds but also our planet?

💬 What role do you think Indigenous knowledge should play in psychedelic therapy? Drop your thoughts below! 👇

Trees do more than just absorb CO2—research shows microbes in tree bark also absorb methane, a powerful greenhouse gas! 🌬️

As ecosystems disappear, so do these natural defenses against climate change. That’s why, in Brazil, we’re working with Indigenous communities to restore forests and mangroves, key players in reducing greenhouse gases. Support us in protecting these ecosystems and enhancing nature’s solutions.

Slime moulds and fungi connect ecosystems in ways that often go unnoticed. 🍄

Through underground networks, they help plants share nutrients and communicate, maintaining balance in their environment. At the , we explored how these natural networks reflect our approach to land restoration—community-led and grounded in collaboration.

As Danny, our director, says: "nature is seeping through every pore of our bodies and pulsing in every heartbeat. We are, and are of, nature."

Agroforestry systems combine tree planting with crops, fishing and sustainable use of native trees, balancing ecological restoration with the community needs. 🌿 This approach supports food security, income generation and climate action.

Through agroforestry, communities have mitigated water shortages while maintaining diverse food production - We've planted around 50,000 seedlings in partnership with Indigenous communities and now aim to expand our project Trees of Music in many more areas of the Atlantic Forest.

From plates to pockets, native species of the Cerrado are key to the diet and economy of Quilombola families and help preserve the region's biodiversity.

Species like the baru nut and macaúba coconut are gaining attention in local and international markets for their nutritional value and versatility. Local cooperatives ensure sustainable production, using every part of the macaúba—from its pulp to its seeds, which are made into flour, bread and biscuits.

Other native species like babaçu coconut, pequi, and cagaita fruit bring unique flavors and health benefits, supporting diverse diets and incomes. Honey production by local communities also supports livelihoods while maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Protecting these species is about more than their market value—it's about keeping native vegetation that supports countless species and prevents further land degradation.

Do you know any of these species?

Over 50,000 fires have been recorded in the Amazon alone in recent months, devastating both ecosystems and communities. The fires have spread a thick cloud of smoke across large parts of the country, even reaching São Paulo and Brasília. 🌬️ The “flying rivers” – air currents that normally bring moisture from the Amazon – are now carrying smoke, impacting air quality across much of Brazil.

This smoke harms biodiversity, vegetation and human health, causing respiratory problems and highlighting how unprepared we are for climate emergencies of this scale. Many areas in recovery, such as patches of native forest, have been destroyed. The crisis is intensified by the dry conditions in Southeast Brazil and low humidity levels.

So, what can we do? Investing in protective measures and restoration is key to ensuring a better future for the communities affected and the biodiversity that depends on these forests standing. 🌳 Support our projects in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest by donating or sharing this message. World Mangroves Day: Scientists estimate that around 80% of commercially valuable marine species depend on mangroves at some stage of their development. 🐟

We work in coastal traditional communities that completely depend on the natural resources of this ecosystem for their livelihoods. From fishing to crab catching, mangroves are integral to their lives.

At RAIN, we’ve planted 100,000 mangrove trees in Maranhão, providing jobs and empowering local people to restore their areas. Our efforts enhance soil health, promote ecological balance and combat climate change.

Today is polling day in the UK! 🗳️ At RAIN, we remain apolitical, endorsing no particular party. However, we understand the profound impact political decisions have on both people and the planet.

In our latest blog post, “Politics and Humanity,” we explore the importance of fostering politics that reflect compassion, inclusivity and sustainability. No matter who you vote for or what you believe in, we invite you to join us in envisioning and working towards a world where we solve problems together and support each other with kindness.

We are proud to report that our project, in partnership with and the Quilombola communities of Alcântara, Maranhão, has reached the milestone of planting 100,000 mangrove propagules. Local people, who have grown up alongside this ecosystem, are at the forefront of regenerating degraded areas that are vital for their families and future.

You can help us plant more, involve more people and engage even more communities.

Today is Biodiversity Day, and we are excited to invite you to join the second phase of our Trees of Music project, highlighting the rich biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest.

As many of you know, we have already planted 50,000 saplings with the primary goal of protecting the Brazilwood tree, an iconic Brazilian species at risk of extinction, renowned for crafting string instrument bows. However, to make a greater impact and continue protecting this precious species, our mission now extends to safeguarding the Atlantic Forest and its biodiversity as a whole. Every tree, every person and every musician is part of this intricate symphony.

We are committed to restoring parts of the Atlantic Forest where Brazilwood can thrive, working closely with traditional communities dedicated to forest preservation. To achieve this, we need your support to invest in a pilot project that will identify the best companion species for Brazilwood and restore priority areas in one of the world’s densest forests.
