Southern water have finally - under media pressure - admitted responsibility for this disasterous pollution event: billions of tiny plastic ‘bio-beads’ released into the sea and now washed up in large numbers on Camber Sands. They have also been found in smaller numbers on Hastings, Bexhill and Pett Level beaches.
The small, black, plastic pellets are caught in the seaweed and peppering the sand, as well as being held in the water where they pose a hazard to birds, fish and mammals. There have been two dead seals spotted - at Camber and at W. St Leonard’s within the last week. We don’t yet know if this is related.
Southern water were aware of the mechanical failure that caused the “spill” of untreated, unfiltered water when it happened (Oct 23rd)
- Why didn’t SW alert the EA and the coastguard on the day, so that rapid action could be taken?
This is not their first spill!
- Why doesn’t Southern Water have a risk assessment in place to mitigate this kind of incident?
So far the response has been managed by volunteers and environmental charities, along with the coastal services of . Huge thanks to all who have volunteered for this work so far 🦾🙏🏼👏
- Why aren’t Southern Water mobilising and FUNDING the beach clean up?
We have heard that SW operatives at their WWTCs have been asking for infrastructure upgrades for years
- Why haven’t SW been improving and upgrading their systems at their Waste Water Treatment plants so that bio beads are phased out of use?
This disaster was predictable and preventable.
- We demand an inquiry
- We demand Southern Water is liable for all costs
- We demand our Water utilities are taken out of private hands
