ROTARY RNLI TALK – SAVING LIVES ON THE THAMES – OPEN TO EVERYONE!
The Rotary Club of Haslemere proudly present a “Welcome to All” event and will be hosting an intriguing talk at Haslewey Community Centre, opposite Tescos, on Wednesday 4th March, 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start, with Stephen Wheatley from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) who will discuss and define the incredible rescue work carried out on the River Thames.
A new search and rescue service for the Thames was announced in January 2001 after a request by the Government to provide lifeboat cover following the Marchioness and Bowbelle disaster in 1989 where a collision between both vessels resulted in the deaths of 51 people. This was the first time the RNLI was asked to specifically cover a river rather than estuarial waters.
Since joining the RNLI in 2005, Stephen has covered more than 480 12-hour shifts and taken part in over 400 ‘shouts’ of which at least eight were designated by the RNLI and His Majesty’s Coast Guard as lives saved. He retired from operational duty at the age of 70 in 2025, the 20th anniversary of his first shift.
Stephen has been awarded both the Queen’s Diamond and Platinum Jubilee Medal, the King’s Coronation medal and has been a committed fundraiser for the RNLI – including partaking in the London Marathon in full protective equipment, which raised over £70k! He is still a volunteer at the Tower Lifeboat station and has enjoyed the privilege of representing the RNLI at a number of prominent events.
This fascinating lecture will be open to both Rotary members and people of the Haslemere community - of all ages and stages in life. Tickets for this unique occasion are just £10pp, which includes a delicious Ploughmans Supper Box and there is a cash bar available. The intention is to donate any profits from this event directly to the RNLI, so please do come along and give your support - an enjoyable evening awaits!
