We've just been alerted about this initiative. Why don't some of you give it a try and if enough Haslemere u3a members show an interest maybe we can work with Grayshott Cricket Club next year to set up a u3a session? The season started in May but apparently newcomers are welcome every Thursday until the end of the summer. Contact Graham at [email protected] for further info.

The Nature and Conservation group visited Magdalen Hill Down near Wi******er with butterfly expert Arthur Greenwood. The weather was perfect and we saw lots of butterflies and wildflowers. We were accompanied for most of the way round by Fiona, the reserve manager. We finished off with a picnic lunch amongst the wildflowers. The next group meeting is on June 18th and we will be visiting Frank's wildlife garden in Haslemere at 11am.

July 16th-Charlotte from the National Trust will give us a guided tour of Swan Barn Farm in Haselemere at 11am

What a lovely day we had at Fernhurst Revels at the weekend. The main thing was - it didn't rain! Our Classic Cars group was well represented with our Group Leader, Richard, proudly guarding the lovely cars. Diana brought along her Majhong set to explain the rules and Vanessa did a great job helping to erect and take down the gazebo. Thank you also to the volunteers who helped man the stall throughout the day.
Our next outing will be at Brook Fete on Bank Holiday Monday. If you can spare an hour to help at the stall we would love to see you. Contact Membership Secretary through the website https://haslemere.u3asite.uk/contact/

HASLEMERE U3A – MAY LECTURE – MONDAY 11TH MAY 1.45PM
FOR 2.00PM – 100 PIERS, PAINTING AT THE WATER’S EDGE WITH
PAUL TRACEY @ HASLEMERE HALL.

Paul Tracey is a London born artist and designer, now living in Hampshire, who has had many solo and group exhibitions of his paintings, drawings and silkscreen prints, exhibiting with the Royal Society of British Artists. All the paintings and some of the memorabilia are published in his book – 100 Piers, Paintings at the Water’s Edge. Paul’s fascinating talk also concentrates on some of the piers we have along the south coast, their history and how they ended up as they are. Our country dancing group today. This is such a friendly group. As you can see there is always a lot of laughter! This dance is called Corn Rigs from 1830. Why not come and give us a try. It's good exercise and good for the brain too.

The Cycling for Fun group recently made good use of the wonderful weather we have been having by cycling from Chiddingfold to Winkworth Arboretum to see the bluebells and azaleas and to have a last cup of tea at the lovely (but closing) cafe. The new visitor centre is on its way!! One of our members owns a penny farthing bicycle and he rode with us (without incident) looking like he owned the road! It certainly garnered a lot of interest both on the road and at Winkworth.

We had a lovely informal get together recently at the Methodist Hall to meet our latest new members. Over a cup of tea and a chat we introduced new members to some of our committee and group leaders so they could chat in person about joining groups and attending social events. Previously only held once a year after enrolment, we now have more people joining throughout the year so we didn't want to wait until next October before meeting our latest members. If you missed this occasion you can always come along to our monthly coffee mornings for a friendly chat with other members. See our events page for what's happening https://haslemere.u3asite.uk/events/

What a lovely walk the 9+ Mile group had around West Dean on a beautiful spring day. Starting from Cocking car park on the S Downs Way with a welcome break at the W Dean cafe and a lunch stop amid the daffodills. On the way we passed all 15 of Andy Goldsworthy's stones. In 2002,15 chalk stones were created by Andy Goldsworthy and installed along a 5 mile stretch of West Sussex countryside. It was part of the Strange Partner's programme, involving the Pallant House Gallery, the Sussex Downs Conservation Board, the National Trust at Petworth House, West Sussex County Council, Chichester District Council, Leconfield Estate, West Dean Estate and Cowdray Estate. Some of the stones have already started to break up. The chalk stones were sourced from a local chalk quarry, chalk representing the very essence of this part of the world.

FEBRUARY LECTURE WITH MALCOLM NELSON – “WHY DO
I ALWAYS FEEL SO GUILTY”- Monday 9th February at 1.45pm
at the Haslemere Hall
Malcolm Nelson worked for HM Customs and Excise for 40 years and he is also a criminologist specialising in smuggling, organised crime and unsolved mysteries. He is credited with discovering the largest quantity of drugs by weight ever found in a single suitcase – forty-two kilos of compressed herbal cannabis! Since his retirement he has delivered fascinating lectures throughout the South of England, as well as on several cruise ships.
This intriguing talk will provide an insight into how Customs Officers select passengers who they think might be carrying drugs. What are the tell-tale signs and how do the guilty ones give themselves away? All will be revealed!
Complimentary teas and coffee will be provided after the lecture.
