What we hear:

❌ "That's not an excuse."

What we should hear:

✅ "Thank you for helping me understand what was happening for you."

Why it matters:

When a child explains their experience, be it ADHD, autism, anxiety or sensory, they're not making excuses.

They're giving us information.

The goal isn't to excuse behaviour.

The goal is to understand it well enough to support change.

✨ Sometimes it's hard to explain exactly what North Star Learning Hub is.

We're not just tuition.
We're not just mentoring.
We're not just wellbeing sessions.

North Star was created for children, young people and their families who need something different.

For the child who can't access school right now.
For the young person whose confidence has been knocked.
For the family who feels like they've tried everything and still haven't found the right fit.

We provide trauma-informed, neuroaffirming support through alternative provision, mentoring, academic pathways, AQA Unit Awards, Functional Skills, family projects and wellbeing opportunities.

Above all, we believe that every child deserves to feel safe, understood and capable of success.

This gives a little insight into what we do, how we work and why we believe in creating flexible pathways that meet children where they are.

💙 Because every learner deserves the chance to find their way.

“Why won’t they just go in?”

If your mornings feel like a battle…
If you’re walking on eggshells…
If you’ve been told to ‘be firmer’…

Let me say this clearly:

This isn’t defiance.
This isn’t poor parenting.

This is a child whose nervous system does not feel safe.

When anxiety is high, the brain doesn’t prioritise learning.
It prioritises survival.

So what looks like:
• Refusal
• Avoidance
• Shutdown

Is often:
• Overwhelm
• Fear
• Loss of control

We don’t fix this with pressure.
We fix this with safety, trust, and the right support.

And no - you’re not alone in this.

💬 Does this resonate with your experience?

🌿 A Little Nourish & Nurture Update 🌿

After much consideration, we've made the decision to take a short pause from our Nourish & Nurture sessions over the summer term.

Whilst we had hoped to continue, ongoing building works at our venue mean that access and parking may be challenging for families, and we never want that to take away from the calm, welcoming experience that Nourish & Nurture is all about.

The good news is that this is only a pause, not a goodbye! 💚

We'll be using the summer months to plan ahead, develop new ideas, and prepare for our return in September.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the project so far. Watching families connect, create, learn and grow together has been incredibly special, and we can't wait to welcome you back after the summer.

Keep an eye on our page over the coming months for updates, new opportunities, and details of our September return.

See you soon! 🌱✨

💚 For any of our North Star families who may feel this is an important opportunity to share their experiences, concerns, or hopes around SEND support locally - we wanted to make sure you had sight of this upcoming SEND Listening Event being hosted by Jonathan Brash MP.

We also want to acknowledge something really important…

For many families, simply “telling your story” is not easy.

By the time parents reach spaces like this, many have already experienced:
• years of fighting to be heard
• emotional exhaustion
• feeling blamed, dismissed, or misunderstood
• repeated retelling of deeply personal experiences
• fear of judgment or repercussions
• the emotional toll of advocating whilst trying to hold their child together at the same time

That vulnerability is real.

So if attending something like this feels important to you, but also overwhelming, anxiety-provoking, or emotionally exposing - please know that response is completely understandable.

At North Star, we see the emotional weight families carry navigating the SEND system every single day. You should never have had to become “experts” through crisis and survival.

If attending would help you feel heard, validated, or part of pushing for change, we would gently encourage you to consider it - but equally, please protect your wellbeing too. You do not owe anyone your trauma in order to prove your child needs support.

If anyone would like support thinking through:
• whether to attend
• what to say
• how to structure concerns
• or simply wants reassurance beforehand

please feel free to reach out privately to us. 💚

No family should have to navigate this alone.

A listening event for parents and carers of children with SEND to share experiences and help shape local support in Hartlepool.

I can’t even bring myself to share the video because I genuinely don’t want to give it more publicity…

…but wow.
Read the room, DfE.

SEND families are exhausted.
Children are struggling.
Parents are fighting for the absolute basics.
Schools are overwhelmed.
And the SEND reform consultation has literally just closed.

So naturally…
the solution was apparently a celebrity cameo and a quirky social media campaign? 🫠

Maybe I’m missing something, but for many families this doesn’t feel funny, reassuring, or hopeful.

It feels tone-deaf.

Because while these videos are being filmed, there are children out of school for months or years due to unmet needs.
Parents battling EHCP systems.
Families facing fines while simultaneously begging for support.
And children sitting at home with “education” consisting of little more than a laptop and a login.

Families do not need PR.
They need support.
Provision.
Understanding.
Action.

And honestly?
Most of all, they need to feel seen.

So if you’re a parent currently fighting battles nobody else sees behind closed doors:
We see you ❤️
