The Greatham Foundation (previously known as the Hospital of God) was founded by Robert de Stichell, the Bishop of Durham in 1273. Our charity has a long and proud history of working with older people, those living with dementia and their family carers in the Hartlepool, North Tees and East Durham areas. Additionally, through our grants programme, we support a number of local charities and social enterprises across the North East. The charity works to develop and provide excellent person-centred care, support and housing services for people, particularly older people and those living with dementia. The Greatham Foundation now employs c100 people and its main charitable activities are:

Residential care for older people at Stichell House Residential Home, a purpose built 35 bed facility set in the beautifully landscaped grounds at Greatham

Day care and community support services for people living with dementia, and their families, delivered through our day centres, our community-based pastimes service and our family support services throughout Hartlepool and East Durham

Support information and advice through our dementia advisory service ‘The Bridge’ in Hartlepool

Supported living for older people in our Almshouses located in Greatham, Norton, Stockton and the wider North-East

The making of grants to voluntary and community sector and those not-for-profit organisations which make a difference to the lives of people in our communities

Stichell House celebrates 20 years

This October, Stichell House marked a significant milestone as we celebrated 20 years since the home first opened its doors in 2006.

To commemorate the occasion, we enjoyed a week of celebrations, bringing together residents, families, colleagues, Trustees and guests to reflect on the home’s history and celebrate the community we have today.

⭐ Afternoon Tea | Sunday 4 October

We began the celebrations with an afternoon tea for residents and their families, providing an opportunity to come together, enjoy music and entertainment and mark this special anniversary.

⭐ 20th Anniversary Stakeholder Event | Tuesday 6 October

We welcomed guests, colleagues and Trustees to a special event at Stichell House. A highlight was the unveiling of a commemorative picture of the home by Peter Bowes, Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham.

⭐ Chapel Service | Wednesday 7 October

A special chapel service offered time for reflection and an opportunity to recognise the significance of the anniversary, recognising the people and community at the heart of Stichell House

⭐ Dress to Impress | Thursday 8 October

Residents enjoyed an anniversary party with music, entertainment and plenty of opportunities to join in the celebrations. The Teesside Ukulele group provided the music, helping to create a lively and enjoyable afternoon.

⭐ Multicultural Celebration | Friday 9 October

We brought the week to a close with a vibrant multicultural celebration, recognising the different cultures and backgrounds that contribute to our Stichell House community. Colleagues wore traditional dress and shared insights into their cultures, with music, dancing and conversation bringing everyone together.

Celebrating 20 years of care and community

Our 20th anniversary has been an opportunity to recognise the people who have shaped Stichell House over the past two decades. From residents and their families to colleagues, Trustees, and partners, every individual has contributed to the home and the community it has become.

We are proud to celebrate this milestone and would like to thank everyone, past and present, who has been part of the Stichell House story.

📍 The Bridge in Hartlepool Town Centre

Our Bridge team were out and about in Hartlepool Town Centre today, holding a satellite session and offering information, advice and support for people living with dementia and their families and carers.

It was a great opportunity to meet people in the community, answer questions and let people know that support is available 💙

If you or someone you know is affected by dementia, you don’t have to face it alone.

A little friendly competition at The Greatham Foundation!

Our staff teams have been getting creative this week for a Scarecrow Competition, organised by our Almshouse Lead as a bit of fun for colleagues across The Greatham Foundation.

There was plenty of creativity, imagination and, of course, a little healthy competition as teams brought their scarecrows to life!

A big thank you to Vice Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham Michael Poole DL and our CEO, Deborah Lewis-Bynoe, for taking the time to judge the entries. With some fantastic creations to choose from, it wasn’t an easy decision!

Well done to everyone who took part and helped make it such an enjoyable activity 👏

A fantastic evening at North East Charity Awards 2026, celebrating the people, organisations and communities making a real difference across our region.

Congratulations to all the winners, and to everyone who was shortlisted. It was inspiring to see so many people coming together to recognise the contribution of the North East charity sector.

It was particularly special to see so many organisations we have supported through The Greatham Foundation’s Small Grants Programme represented at the awards. We were delighted to have Dawn from The Haven , and Ziad and Carole from Chilli Studios join us on our table for the evening.

We’re proud to support the ideas, passion and commitment of local organisations through our grants programme, and it was wonderful to see some of the people and projects we’ve funded being celebrated alongside the wider North East charity sector.

A really uplifting evening and a great reminder of the difference the sector makes every day.

Congratulations to everyone involved. 👏

A significant milestone for Greatham Marsh

We are pleased to see the return of the tide to Greatham Marsh for the first time in more than 200 years, marking an important milestone in the Greatham Saltmarsh Restoration Scheme.

We are proud to have worked in partnership with the Environment Agency and Northumbrian Water on this important project, helping to restore valuable saltmarsh habitat, support wildlife and deliver lasting environmental benefits for the Tees Estuary.
