First day of actual beekeeping at Moorlands today!

A few suit & glove sizing issues but too big is better than too small with bee suits and everyone was able to take part…phew!

Today we learnt how to make 2:1 syrup and then went out to feed it to the bees.

Great session with our nursery & junior groups at Moorland School in Clitheroe today.

We had a close up look at a frame of bees using a special viewing case, we designed honey jar labels, and we tasted 3 different types of honey (the buckwheat honey from our community apiary at Bluehouse Field’s, Wolviston was definitely a marmite situation!)

Looking forward to getting our suits on next week and visiting the hive!

We're delighted that Telling the Bees has been awarded funding by the new National Lottery Awards for All Environment Fund! We will be able to bring the project further into the community and introduce lots more people in Teesside & County Durham to the joys of beekeeping.

Look out for our Hive Lead, Damien Barber, at Hartlepool Folk Festival where he'll be sharing songs, stories, bee lore, offering honey tastings and (if it's not too cold) introducing you to some of our bees in the Observation Hive.

Our Deaf Hill Primary School bees (sponsored by The Fisherman’s Arms on the Headland in Hartlepool), have been a bit exciteable lately. We decided to take them on a little holiday while we get them settled and happy again. The kind folks at Bluehouse Kennels offered space on their farm, which is being re-wilded and biodiversified, so the bees have lots of space and loads of lovely food to eat! We’ll bring you updates as they progress over the next few weeks. We’re also training up two new Deaf Hill beekeepers! Our beekeeping coordinator, Damien Barber, has been an absolute star in recent weeks, supporting the colonies to grow and thrive.

Thanks so much to The Fishermans Arms on the Headland in Hartlepool, who have raised just over £300 for the project in May!
