As we approach the 16 days of activism against gender based violence, we're really pleased to be supporting the team behind a new play by Hartlepool-based group, Transformers HPL, which aims to promote dialogue around the issue of forced marriage.
Their production - FIRESTORM - has been supported by Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland Matt Storey, who wrote:
"For some ethnically diverse communities, including those who have migrated or sought sanctuary in the UK, domestic abuse can be hidden under the guide of cultural norms or practices. It is important we use innovative projects, designed by and for diverse groups, to teach important lessons about abuse under UK law.
I think the FIRESTORM production is a great way to do this, by using theatre as way to highlight the hidden signs of abuse and the impact it has on victims. I'm pleased the show will explain how we can all be good bystanders, by giving real tips on how to safely reject and call out abusive behaviour of men towards women.
In addition to financially supporting the play, I've also funded Transformers HPL to deliver several cultural workshops, where diverse groups representing a range of nationalities will be educated about domestic abuse and discrimination. I'm confident this work will help to encourage those from underrepresented groups to reach out to the police and other support agencies about abuse they may have been hiding.
When it comes to ending VAWG, it is simply not acceptable to ask women and girls to change their behaviour. We need men to speak up, check their own behaviour and call out the attitudes of their relatives, friends and colleagues. If you're male and reading this - be part of the solution. Be an advocate by empowering the women and girls around you - and calling out harmful and abusive behaviour of other men."
