We know that this Father’s Day may be different for both fathers and their loved ones. Some fathers may be enduring illness, while others may be missing a father or father figure this year. We want you to know that we are thinking of you.

Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful Dads.

Tablet helps assess stroke patients

We were delighted to fund a tablet to help with stroke patients’ treatment.

The tablet has tools to assess stroke patients’ vision and thinking skills, which help staff plan the right treatment.

Using the tablet means staff do not need paper assessment tools, which saves time, improves accuracy, and helps staff understand each assessment better.

Cool relief for dialysis patients

When the ice machine in the renal unit at Northwick Park Hospital became irreparable, we stepped in to help purchase a much-needed replacement.

Claire Edwards, head nurse and matron at the renal centre, explains the challenges faced by patients undergoing dialysis.

“Due to their kidneys no longer being able to remove excess fluid, these patients must limit their fluid intake, often to just one small bottle of water (about 500 to 750ml) each day. If they exceed these limits, fluid can accumulate dangerously in their bodies between dialysis treatments, leading to fluid overload and potentially serious complications.

“Ice is a simple but effective way to help manage the persistent thirst experienced by dialysis patients. With the new ice machine, we can now offer patients ice cubes and small iced juice drinks during their treatment sessions, providing welcome relief and comfort.

“This will make a huge difference to patients receiving care in the renal unit, so thanks so much to LNWH Charity for their funding.”

It's open 🎉

Simon Crawford, Deputy Chief Executive officially opened the recently refurbished therapy garden at Northwick Park Hospital this week.

You may remember that we donated £1m towards transformation and innovation and the green project was given the thumbs up by staff who voted for this and three other projects to go ahead.

The rain stopped just long enough for guests to gather, and we hope everyone enjoys the garden for many years to come.

It was an absolute pleasure to meet Nadeem Aslam aka therunningmeem recently.

He turned 50 last year and set himself the mammoth challenge of running 50 marathons and half marathons in memory of his parents, who both sadly passed away following complications from falls.

With a staggering 27 runs under his belt, he's well on the way to achieving his target.

His challenge is raising money for the Falls Team at Northwick Park Hospital, where his parents were treated and cared for in their final days.

The team does vital work to raise awareness about falls and provides practical guidance on how to prevent them. Their advice is valuable not only for older people but for everyone.

Any donation, big or small, will help them continue their important work https://www.justgiving.com/page/nadeems50at50

The infection prevention and control message everyone hears 🎤

Thanks to our funding, even colleagues seated at the back are now able to hear crucial information delivered by the infection prevention and control team during training sessions.

Marc Medina, an infection prevention and control nurse, highlighted the challenges faced when training large groups: “We provide training for up to 70 staff members in large spaces, and feedback revealed that those furthest away often struggled to hear what we were saying.”

“To address this, I applied to LNWH Charity to purchase a mobile PA system and was delighted that the request was approved.

“Education about preventing infection is vital for keeping both colleagues and patients safe. We recently used the new mobile system during a training session, and everyone heard us loud and clear.

“Thanks to the Charity for funding this useful piece of equipment. It will make our jobs easier.”

David smashed the London Marathon 🎉

Huge congratulations to David Warunge for completing the TCS London Marathon and he still can’t believe it. “It's the hardest thing I’ve ever done - mentally, physically and emotionally, but also one of the best experiences of my life. I completed it in 3:47:51 which is fantastic, as I was aiming for three and half hours.

“I honestly couldn’t have done it without the support of my fantastic friends, who showed up and shouted me through the miles. Seeing them all on the route carried me all the way to the finish line.

“A massive thank you to everyone who donated. Together we raised £2,208 smashing my initial target of £500. Thanks also to LNWH Charity for giving me this opportunity.”

As a token of our appreciation, we presented David with a delicious hamper, filled will lots of goodies for him to enjoy.

You did us and yourself proud David. Well done ❤️

If you'd like to take up the challenges for us next year, we'd love to hear from you. Email us at [email protected]

The importance of end-of-life conversations

Thanks to our funding, staff caring for patients at the end of their lives, now feel more confident having sensitive and difficult conversations with them, their family and loved ones.

A series of half day courses covering theory, simulation with actors and reflection was delivered to medical registrars or equivalent Trust grade doctors at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.

Dr Charles Daniels, Macmillan consultant in palliative medicine said: “Having honest, sensitive and complex conversations can sometimes be challenging, particularly around resuscitation, treatment, future care or when patients don’t respond to treatment, and there are many reasons for this.”

"It is important that when patients are too unwell, frail or lack the resilience to respond to certain treatments (such as cardiac resuscitation) we are compassionate in the ways we inform patients and/or their families. This course is designed to help our doctors to do this well."

“Feedback following the courses shows that those who attended feel they have more confidence and better skills to have sympathetic conversations, gauge understanding and slowly give information while making it less overwhelming for everyone involved. We are delighted that the evaluation has shown such change in confidence and practice.

“We’re really grateful to LNWH Charity for funding this worthwhile course, and we hope to build a larger group of trainers to deliver this programme at least six times a year within LNWH NHS Trust.”
