The May Environmental Update from Tina, WI Committee Member and our correspondent on all things green.

Buses, Follifoot and Climate Change

Both my brother and sister don’t drive so have to consider travel more carefully than I ever do. The result, neither feel they could easily live in Follifoot. The extremely difficult task of getting to Pannal for the Leeds train without a car or similarly going to Knaresborough for any reason make it very hard for non drivers. I’ve heard stories about buses from the village going as far as York in the past and then now the difficulty of what happens when you get too unwell to drive.

Set against that where we live we actually see the buses that do rattle through the village are often nearly empty apart from at rush hour. They clearly can’t be sustainable economically or environmentally. At one an hour or just once on Saturday the ‘I don’t have time to wait’ feeling is not unjustified either. We are rather stuck at the moment and it’s a big contrast to our old home where the nearby buses went every 10-15 mins.

So where does climate change fit with all that? I looked up the comparison between bus and car travel and the figures vary widely depending upon what you consider. Lots of places settle on local bus travel having half the carbon footprint of car travel at 0.5lbs instead of 1 lb of CO2 per person per mile. One place mentioned an electric bus (which we don’t have) being 88 times better than a diesel car. I actually think Follifoot bus journeys could be seen as even better. Those buses go through the village anyway and any car left at home once (even an electric one) means a 100% improvement for just those few miles.

So, have you ever been on the bus to Harrogate or Wetherby? I admit just occasionally for us and normally if the car is at the garage. If we find the time to try it out more, and if we use google maps which shows you where the bus is, it means we would even know when to leave the house. You never know our non driving future selves might thank us for helping to keep the route running.

Tomorrow it’s the last Friday of the month, so don’t forget that it’s the fabulous Coffee & Cake Morning at the Harewood Arms. Tomorrow’s Coffee & Cake is in aid of the wonderful St Michael’s Hospice, and I’ll let Follifoot WI Member and star baker Kath tell you all about it.

Follifoot WI May Meeting

The May meeting of the Follifoot WI took place in the gorgeous surroundings of the Rudding Park Hotel once again, and we all enjoyed views of the beautiful gardens as the backdrop to our discussions and talk.

The main topics for discussion were the annual membership renewals, the first members survey, the monthly WI quiz nights and the upcoming June outing to Yorke House and the White Cottage Garden, which sounds delightful.

Our speaker for the evening was the very lovely Louisa Scott-Priestley of LSP Permanent Make Up, who came to talk to us about enhancing natural beauty and the benefits of permanent make-up.

Having taught Beauty Therapy to 16-18 year olds at Harrogate College, Louisa trained to become a permanent makeup artist eight years ago, after a close family member had an unfortunate permanent makeup experience and Louisa was convinced that she could do better, and for the last two years she has been practicing from her lovely studio on the Haggs Farm Business Park.

Her most popular treatments are Brow Tattoo, Lip Blush and Eyeliner Tattoo, but Louisa also does Laser Tattto Removal and Skin Rejuvenation treatments. Eyebrows were definitely the most popular subject of the evening and brow tattoos are probably Louisa's most popular treatment, as the majority of Louisa's clients are over 40 the problem of disappearing eyebrows is one of the most common one she encounters. Many of Louisa's brow clients have also had to deal with the hair loss side effects of chemo, when having beautifully tattooed brows and eyeliner can be a huge morale boost. Lip coloration also declines with age, so the lip blush tattoo, Louisa's personal favourite, replaces the colour with that of a favourite lipstick and redefines the lips, and the eyeliner tattoo is perfect for all of us with ageing eyesight and the need to use a 10 x magnifying mirror every morning!

Louisa explains that most procedures require several appointments and occasional top ups to keep them looking their best, and the first free 30-minute consultation that she offers is the perfect opportunity to find out if a treatment is right for you. She also explains that she has had all of the treatments herself, as she wouldn't want to do anything to anyone that she hadn't personally experienced, and certainly won't agree to a treatment if she doesn't think it will look fabulous.

Judging from the number of questions that were asked, and the hubbub of conversation after the talk, everyone found it a fascinating and uplifting topic. Thank you Louisa and Rudding Park for a very lovely evening.

So many members asked for Louisa’s details we’re including her details here:
