We at MASICORP and Masicorp UK are saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Alan McKelvey .
Alan was truly one of a kind and a legend in Masicorp.
A larger-than-life personality, and once described as a serial entrepreneur, he was always looking for fundraising and networking opportunities for Masicorp. He never shied away from introducing himself if the opportunity presented itself.
In 2009, Alan and his partner, Anne Molloy were invited by Andrew Smith (then CEO of Masicorp) to visit South Africa. Each year thereafter, he returned to Kommetjie for three months, immersing himself in Masicorp’s work and the Masiphumelele community. We are very grateful to Anne, who let Alan spend most of his time in South Africa with us.
He loved South Africa, Masi and its people. He very quickly became a friend, colleague, and comrade (he loved referring to himself as such) to all.
Alan was a Trustee on both the UK Board and the Global Trustee Board and a force for good in fundraising. He and Anne were also faithful donors.
Alan encouraged his close family to visit us, meet the team and experience our education programmes. For them, this was a wonderful opportunity to see and support ‘’Grandad’s” work, where he committed himself so tirelessly. He was such a proud father and grandfather. We at Masicorp enjoyed many special stories of his family and were delighted to be able to meet them in person when they visited.
Some of Alan’s past projects included joining the entrepreneur programme to support Nonny’s Bakery which he funded through his 65th birthday. He and Anne were also supporters and mentors to Masicorp Bursary Student Anelisa. Anne and Alan also spearheaded the Masicorp Dignity Programme, which has to date, delivered thousands of sanitary products to needy women and girls living in Masiphumelele.
Alan was instrumental in many other fundraising initiatives for Masicorp too. He established the well-attended House of Lords events and represented Masicorp at the prestigious Nedbank South Africa Charity Golf Day. Together with Vince van der Bijl, Alan was also involved in organising the Under 9 Rugby tournament here in South Africa through his relationship with The Barbarians Rugby Team. This tournament saw children from all communities being brought together through the game of rugby, building relationships and removing barriers.
For our South African team, Alan was more than a colleague; he was a friend. Full of energy and always hands-on, he never passed on an opportunity to learn a new skill. Alan cared for our team, putting effort into getting to know every person that crossed his path.
Over the last year, we were welcomed to be a part of his health journey. Alan inspired us every day with his upbeat and positive approach to a very challenging diagnosis.
Our thoughts and love go out to Anne, her daughter Rebecca and grandchildren Ella and Willow, daughters Rebecca and Nicola, their partners Martin and Adam, and grandchildren Lucy, Sophie, Harry and Felix.
We will miss his humour and boldness.
Please feel free to express your memories as a remembrance of Alan for the family and Masicorp.
