The Poor Law of the 1830s led to the building of workhouses throughout the country, including in Essex. Although grim institutions that carried a social stigma, they provided shelter and food for the destitute of Victorian Britain, invariably in exchange for work. This talk is based on the speaker's research into several of his ancestors who ended their days in Essex workhouses. Illustrated by contemporary accounts and images, it describes how this system of social support evolved until its demise in the 1930s.
After the talk refreshments will be available.
The hall is fully accessible to the disabled. There is free parking at the hall.
