⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️An Absolute Honour (and Complete Kitten Chaos!)
When Angie from Meowcat Rescue asked me to foster GEM, a heavily pregnant cat who had been dumped at a vet surgery, I thought I knew what I was signing up for.
I did not.
For weeks, Angie kept winding me up, telling me Gem was going to have five kittens… then six… then seven. I laughed and told her she was being ridiculous.
Turns out Angie wasn’t joking.
Gem gave birth to NINE beautiful kittens.
NINE!
I was lucky enough to be there while she delivered every one of them – a gorgeous mix of little ginger and black bundles of mischief. My daughter Wren and I spent countless hours helping care for them, including hand-feeding some of the smaller babies, and I don’t think either of us got over the shock of just how many kittens one cat could produce.
Through it all, Gem was the most incredible mum. Patient, gentle, loving and endlessly devoted. To this day, I have absolutely no idea how she managed to produce enough milk to keep nine hungry mouths fed. She was always ready with a little head bump, a gentle purr and a request for affection. Unless, of course, breakfast service was running late. In that case, she’d be at the lounge door at 7am sharp, banging and loudly reminding me that my staff performance was slipping and that management expected better.
As the kittens grew, life became beautifully chaotic. Walking into the lounge felt less like entering a room and more like stepping into a travelling circus. Kittens appeared in every cupboard, every crevice and every place you thought was impossible to reach. There were water bowls everywhere, food bowls everywhere, toys everywhere, and an endless stream of tiny furry bodies launching themselves around the room at high speed.
Some days it was hard work.
Every single minute was worth it.
Watching those babies grow into healthy, confident, happy cats was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. And while saying goodbye was emotional, it filled my heart with pride to see every one of them go to such wonderful homes.
Meeting the families who came to adopt them in pairs was genuinely heartwarming. Every single person was kind, caring and excited to give these little cats the love, security and future they deserved.
From the bottom of my heart, fostering for Meowcat Rescue has been an absolute privilege.
I’m incredibly grateful to Angie and the whole team for trusting Wren and I with Gem and her babies. Their support throughout was amazing – always available, always reassuring, always ready with advice, encouragement and a kind word whenever it was needed.
And, of course, a special thank you to Angie, who not only guided us through nine kittens’ worth of chaos but also helped celebrate the end of an adventure with a well-earned glass of wine.
If you’ve ever thought about fostering, I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s messy, exhausting, emotional, hilarious and sometimes completely bonkers. But helping vulnerable animals get the start of life they deserve is one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.
