Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026 – Theme: Together for a

Project Luangwa proudly joined other institutions such as Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust - CWET and Time + Tide Foundation in commemorating International Menstrual Hygiene Day at Munkhanya Primary School. This year’s theme, “Together for a Period Friendly World”, reminds us that menstruation should never be a barrier to education, dignity, or opportunity.

During the event we officially handed over newly constructed toilets to the school, a milestone that will greatly improve sanitation and dignity for learners. The occasion was attended by the District Commissioner for Mambwe, alongside key stakeholders including the representative of Chief Mnkhanya, the DEBS, District Health representatives, the PTA Chairperson, Zone Head, and fellow NGOs.

Children and beneficiaries presented poems and speeches and this commemoration was not only a celebration of progress but also a call to action: to continue breaking taboos, promoting dignity, and ensuring that no child misses school because of menstruation.

A huge thank you to the team for organising and the incredible donors who have supported the library and toilet projects at Mnkhanya and covered the costs of important community events such as this.

Also thank you to our amazing team for putting everything together! 🙏🏻🙏🏾

Sports Season is Officially Open at the JK Centre! ⚽️

Last week, our Foundation Programme students and staff faced the local Madalas team in a friendly game of football and netball at the JK Centre. Even though our football team lost 2:1, the netball team saved the day and brought home a trophy!

The day provided a much-needed spur of enthusiasm, motivation, and encouragement to further grow and develop the JK Centre, where sports can be used as a vehicle for learning.

We are excited to see more sports games and activities taking place at the JK Centre this year, with a wider sports tournament already underway.

We are grateful to all our partners and donors who have continuously supported the development of the JK Centre. We are excited to see the impact of sports continuing to grow with every game.

🌱 Growing Impact in Mnkhanya Chiefdom 🌱

This week, our team revisited households in Mnkhanya Chiefdom where trees were planted as part of our Eco-Stove project in 2024 — and the progress has been incredible! What were once small saplings are now thriving trees.

These trees are more than just growth in the ground. They represent a long-term investment in sustainable fuel sources, reduced pressure on local forests, and healthier communities.

A huge thank you to the Elephant Charge for their vital support in funding these trees. Your contribution is providing shade and fuel for future generations.

We are also incredibly grateful to Expert Africa for their continued backing of the wider Eco-Stove project, enabling us to reach hundreds of households across the Luangwa Valley.

It’s inspiring to see these small beginnings grow into something tangible. 🌿

Amazing to welcome our newest Foundation Programme students for 2026!

The students will now spend 7 months with us, staying on site in the new Boarding House at the JK Centre, learning critical life skills such as public speaking, ICT, financial planning and writing techniques.

We also welcome our first cohort of UNICAF students, allowing some of last year’s students and opportunity to study a degree online, with the support and encouragement of their peers around them.

Can’t wait to follow the progress of these bright young minds over the next few months and thank you to everyone who has supported us and them along this journey.

We were delighted to welcome our friends from the Livingstone Foundation for Africa/Fundacion Livingstone to the Luangwa Valley last week.

Their visit was a wonderful opportunity to share the impact of their support firsthand, from touring the JK Centre and seeing its growing potential as a hub for learning and community activity, to visiting Kapita and Nsefu schools and meeting the incredible students and staff who benefit from their generosity.

It was particularly special to spend time with the students they sponsor, hearing their stories, ambitions, and the real difference this support is making in their lives. Moments like these are a powerful reminder of why these partnerships matter so much.

We were also thrilled to share some lighter moments together, including football kit give-outs that brought huge excitement and smiles across the schools.

Thank you to the Livingstone Foundation for your continued belief in our work, your commitment to education, and your genuine connection with the communities we serve. We are incredibly grateful for your partnership and look forward to continuing this journey together.

Over the past week, we’ve been deeply moved by the incredible support shown in response to the flooding in South Luangwa. Thank you to everyone who has so generously donated and reached out, your kindness is already making a real difference on the ground.

With your support, we have been able to distribute emergency food parcels to affected households, helping families through an incredibly difficult period. Encouragingly, water levels are now beginning to drop, and conditions are slowly improving.

Next week, we will be meeting with the Disaster Management Unit, local government, and community leaders to assess the situation and plan how best to support communities as they begin to recover and rebuild.

Thank you again for standing with the Luangwa Valley at this time and for supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
