Sometimes the thing that tips a child over can seem so small.

Shoes on πŸ₯Ώ πŸ‘ž
Turn the screen off πŸ“Ί πŸ“±
Time to leave ➑️
A sibling says the wrong thing πŸ—£

And we can find ourselves thinking, β€œWhy has THAT caused such a big reaction?”

But that moment may only be the final drop πŸ’§

They may have already been carrying sensory overload, tiredness, anxiety, demands, frustration, hunger or a need for connection. By the time we see the behaviour, their capacity may already be stretched to its limit.

Instead of focusing only on the final trigger, get curious about what has been filling their cup.
Because when we understand what led to the behaviour, we have a much better chance of knowing what they need from us.

And sometimes, the most helpful response isn't another consequence or another demand. It's helping to reduce the load.

Back to school: support for families as the new term begins

The return to school can bring a mix of emotions for children, young people, and their families. Some children are excited to get back into routine, while others may be feeling worried, overwhelmed, or uncertain about the changes ahead. Our peer educators at SPACE, who are parents and carers with lived experience of supporting children with SEND, have shared some gentle reminders for the start of the new school year.

Tip 1: Make space for feelings

Talk to your child about how they are feeling about the year ahead when they are calm and regulated, in a pressure-free way. Some children may find it easier to share their thoughts through activities rather than direct conversation. You could try keeping a diary or journal together, drawing pictures about school, using emotion cards or a feelings scale. Remember, there doesn't need to be a big conversation all at once. Small, regular check-ins can help children feel heard and supported.

Tip 2: Create predictability where you can

Ask the school for a visual timetable – or create your own. Having a visual timetable can help children understand what their school day will look like, making it feel more predictable and reducing uncertainty about the return to school.

Transitions rarely look the same for every child. Some children settle quickly, while others may need more time and support. If things don't go quite as hoped in the first few days or weeks, that's okay. Adjusting to a new routine can take time. We're here to support you

Upcoming webinars include:

Thursday 3 September - Demand Avoidance

Wednesday 9 September - Masking

Friday 11 September - Executive Functioning

Monday 14 September - After School Distress

Remember: there's no "perfect" start to the school year. Whether your child settles quickly or needs a little longer, support is available and you're not alone.

SENsational Football and Fun Day! ⚽

Colchester United Football Club on Sunday, 30th August.

The event has been organised to bring families together for a fun, inclusive day out. There will be a disco, football activities, stalls, games, and a variety of other entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

To help create a comfortable experience for all attendees, there will be a morning and an afternoon session. This helps reduce the number of people attending at one time and provides flexibility for families to choose the session that best suits them.

For more information contact [email protected] or scan the QR codes in the poster.

We hope you all have a great time!
