The Workshop 'Empowering Young People Through The Arts'

The Workshop uses the Arts as a means to provide opportunities for young people to focus their energies on creativity. They are able to develop the essential skills to enrich their lives and others, learning from The Workshop's philosophy of 'How many people are happier because you were born?'. The skills learned in the theatre are applicable in the outside world giving the young people a better chance at higher tier employment.

The Workshop runs on ticket sales, class fees, and donations. That's it. No franchise behind it, no national body with deep pockets. Just Halifax, since 1985, and the money that comes in.

Donations cover the things that don't appear on a ticket stub or a term fee receipt. Maintaining a Grade II listed building costs more than it would otherwise. Scripts, class materials, and production costs add up across four shows a year. And then there's the part that matters most, making sure that if a family can't cover term fees, their young person comes anyway.

The Workshop has been here for forty years. If you'd like to help keep it here for forty more, every donation goes directly to the things that keep it running.

Most places teach young people how and when.

The Workshop asks why.

Why does this work? Why does this moment land? Why does standing in front of other people and doing something uncertain feel like the most useful thing you can do at seventeen? These are not small questions. They are the ones that stay with you long after the stage lights go down; in job interviews, in relationships, in every room you'll ever walk into and have to make an impression.

Youth theatre for 11 to 19 year olds. Every Saturday, Halifax. First session free.

Most theatre groups rehearse somewhere else and perform somewhere else.

The young people at The Workshop rehearse on the stage they'll perform on. Every Saturday morning, the same boards, the same lights, the same space that will fill with an audience on opening night. By the time that night arrives, the stage is not a new place. It's the most familiar room they know.

The space is already yours before anyone buys a ticket.

This Sunday at The Workshop.

The Halifax Slasher is one of those stories that sounds too strange to be true. A mysterious attacker stalking the streets of Halifax in 1938. Scotland Yard brought in. The town descending into vigilantism. And a resolution that nobody saw coming.

Local historian David Glover pieces it all together. This Sunday is a rare chance to hear it told properly.

📅 Sunday 17th May, doors 2pm, talk 2.30pm

Less than £5 a month keeps a 40-year-old independent Halifax charity doing what it does.

The Workshop Angels programme starts at £4.17 a month, that's the Sweetie tier. You get 10% off every ticket, your name in the programme, and priority booking. Move up to Luvvie (£8.34) and you add a backstage pass and bar queue privileges. Become an Absolute Dahling (£20.83) and you get two free tickets and a bottle of wine every time you walk through the door.

In Halifax since 1985. Still independent. Still here because people like you make it possible.
