From helping to save a local park to supporting families through Holy Nativity Church, Jo Beacroft-Mitchell has spent more than 20 years getting involved in community life.

Jo was shortlisted for Outstanding Individual at this year’s Community Spirit Awards, recognising her dedication to Mixenden and the people who live there.

In our latest interview, she talks about how a part-time job at the Community Foundation first sparked her interest in community work, why listening matters and what she believes makes Mixenden such a special place.

“It’s never about fixing people. It’s about relationships. It’s about knowing and loving people and then identifying where you can help.”

There’s still time to apply for a Trailblazer Inclusion Grant, but the deadline is this week.

Funded by Calderdale Council, the fund will support local organisations working with Calderdale residents who are currently a long way from employment and may face barriers that make taking that next step difficult.

It’s about reaching people who need the right support, in the right way, and helping them move gradually towards work.

Applications close at 10.00 am this Thursday, 13th August.

Every child should have the chance to enjoy their school holidays.

Our Healthy Holidays Calderdale Annual Impact Report 2025–26 looks back at another incredible year of helping children across Calderdale enjoy active, healthy and enjoyable school holidays.

Last summer:

✅ 7,101 children eligible for free school meals took part
✅ 21,321 activity sessions were attended
✅ 1,292 children with SEND accessed inclusive provision

From forest school and sports to cooking, STEM and performing arts, children took part in a wide range of activities.

As one parent told us:

“I don't know how we would get through the holidays without it.”

Thank you to every provider, volunteer, school and partner who helped make this possible.

We had the pleasure of visiting Noa's Place this week, where founder Josh told us why he set up the charity and how it supports neurodivergent young people and their families through play and learning sessions.

A grant from CFFC helped with the variety of activities in the provision, and it was amazing to see the children getting involved and enjoying the space.

Keep a look-out for our video, where Josh gives us a deeper insight into the difference Noa’s Place is making for local families and his vision for its future.

After being violently assaulted twice at a bus station, one neurodivergent student became too frightened to return to college.

PC Steph from West Yorkshire Police - Halifax worked with staff at Calderdale College to set up the Walk and Talk Group to help the student feel safe again. It began with three students and has since grown into a close group that meets each week to walk and pick up litter in local green spaces.

The Walk and Talk Group was a finalist at our Community Spirit Awards this year. We spoke to PC Steph about how it began, why walking side by side can help young people open up and the difference the group has made.
