IMPORTANT NOTICE!

We set up this page as we were unable to make our private group public, to increase visibility for HSS.

Facebook rules have now changed, enabling us to make our group public (all older posts will not be visible to new members).

The advantage of a group over a page is that everyone can post pics of their nature finds, and chat about things they have seen.

WE WILL CLOSE THIS PAGE ON SUNDAY 1ST FEB.

If you follow us here, but are not in our group, please sign up to the group!

Having one page should make life simpler... And less confusing for people searching for us!

Thank you!

An evening of chatting, cake and a quick quiz. Disperse to a pub in Halifax town centre after the meeting, for those so inclined. Meanwhile, can you identify the animal eyes? You will need to have your wits about you to avoid total humiliation in this supremely difficult quiz!

All welcome!

The AGM was well attended, with summaries of exciting new species spotted from the main recorders, alongside observations of what has thrived or done poorly in a very hot dry 2024, as well as an update from chair Anthony Arak on the Bridestones Rewilded project.

We intend to use this page better to publicise future events, as well as encouraging people to use the members group page to record pictures of flora and fauna spotted in Calderdale.

One caveat... Please avoid exact locations for any sensitive/rare sightings. Please message us directly with locations.

Thank you!

As part of our 150th anniversary celebrations, there is an exhibition on display until 30th May, at Halifax library.

It showcases the drawings of Clifford Lees.

Clifford was a talented illustrator who got an art school place in London but had to return to Halifax as his father’s business needed him. He worked part time as an artist and columnist for the Halifax Daily Courier and the Yorkshire Ridings Magazine.

Many thanks to Steve Blacksmith for putting out together, and creating the 150th anniversary booklet, based on the one created for the 100th anniversary!

Where have all the butterflies gone? Have you noticed, after a long journey, there are far fewer flies β€œsplatted” on your windscreen than there were 15 years ago? Food chains are often dependent on insect pollinators, but we are decimating our bee populations by the uncontrolled use of pesticide...
