Now more than ever it feels like unity matters.
Now more than ever we need to show up for each other with love, care and respect, even when we have different views.
The hope for Halifax Unity is that we would connect across our different communities and build trust and solidarity. We wanted to have the conversations that move us beyond polarisation to something new.
There's so much more but we have made a start.
It's interesting how flags have become a symbol of both strength/pride and division/hate. There's more to learn here.
The Palestinian flag.
The British flag.
The inclusive pride flag.
They mean many things, to different people, at different times. We need to keep having these conversations, open to nuance, finding our way through.
On that note, I wish everyone could take in what having the rainbow flag in the space signifies to us - it means everyone is welcome, no matter who you love, or how you identify, you are welcome here. We want to live beyond judgement of each other, instead we commit to look inside ourselves, see where we have negative reactions and what needs to transform. It's what Islam teaches as much as any other path, from what I understand.
May the spirit of unity and solidarity continue. Now more than ever, it matters.
