Workers Memorial Day Stone by Halifax Central Library

Every year more people are killed at work than in wars. Join us to pay your respects to those who have given their lives or been injured in their workplace.

Remember the dead, fight for the living

Everyone welcome – please come

Each year, 2.3 million people are killed by work worldwide. This is greater than the numbers killed by war.

124 workers were killed in the UK in work related incidents in 2024-25. Many more died as a result of the impact of work. There are currently more than 5,000 deaths per year attributable to asbestos-related diseases.

There is an unwillingness on the part of the authorities to take robust action to improve health, safety and welfare at work. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has inadequate resources – while there used to be meetings organised annually for safety reps by the HSE, these have dwindled substantially. HSE inspections have fallen dramatically and the inspectors rarely have a safety background.

For 2026, the TUC is focusing on the need to prevent violence at work, calling for greater protections from verbal and physical abuse and violence in workplaces, and such protections to be enshrined in law.

Calderdale TU Council, consisting of trade unionists from affiliated union branches, has made a short Workers Memorial Day film unique to Halifax. This remembers Andrew Tibbott who lost his life in a local workplace accident in 2017, for which his employer was imprisoned. It can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLyeMYnpVjo

‘He Who Weeps’ - The Halifax Boiler Explosion 1850

Although much remains to be done to make work safer it is thanks largely to trade unions that improvements have been won over many decades. When the industrial revolution started, the number of deaths at work was massive. Close to the site on which Eureka now stands, a major boiler explosion in 1850 killed 12 people, the majority of whom were children. Their names will be read out on 28 April.

Calderdale TU Council has published a booklet about the 1850 boiler explosion, thanks to a generous donation from Unite members at Marshalls branch. Download the booklet fromhttps://markwrite.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/he-who-weeps.pdf
