Last weekend the Pattern, supported by Le Régiment Gatinois, 1781 - UK had the chance to showcase the civilian side of life at Earby Georgian Fair.

Trades and crafts were demonstrated, food cooked and camp life explained. Gossip was exchanged in the coffee house.

The boys in red portrayed a recruiting party and demonstrated drill and musket fire.

The public thoroughly enjoyed the event, especially the children!

It was a relaxed social event which gave us a chance to catch up and also welcome new members.

The 33rd regiment, Le Régiment Gatinois, 1781 - UK and attached civilians will be attending the Georgian Fayre at Earby, Lancashire (or is it Yorkshire? 😉) next Sunday (17th May).

Come and see the civilians plying their trade while the recruiting serjeant and his soldiers try to tempt likely lads to serve the King!

Our counterparts in Le Regiment Gatinois will be educating us about the role of the French army in the American Revolution.

This weekend, our first uniformed outing of 2026 saw a small party of the Pattern participate in a conference "The British Army and the American War, 1775-83: Fresh Perspectives”, at the National Army Museum in Chelsea, London, hosted by The Society for Army Historical Research.

Our focus for the day was the paper given by Dr Robbie MacNiven, Pattern member and the author of “The Pattern: The 33rd Regiment and the British Infantry Experience During the American Revolution, 1770-1783” for Hellion Books.

It gave us the opportunity to talk to numerous interested delegates and share our enthusiasm for the period, and the Pattern.

Don’t forget you can join the Pattern at any time, as a soldier, civilian, or supporter. Just send us a message.

For our second training day of 2026, we traveled to the East Riding of Yorkshire, practicing manoeuvres across muddy fields, and welcoming several new recruits to the joys of the Manual Exercise.

We had so many ‘interesting’ comments about our forming threes reel last month, that we thought we’d share another reel of us practising it.

It’s not too late to join us. We have training sessions in Kent, Cheshire and of course Yorkshire before the season starts, and you’d be welcome to come along and say hello.

Last weekend was our first training day of 2026, alongside the Pattern Annual General Meeting, at the Regimental Museum in Halifax, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It was cold and foggy, but it stayed dry long enough for us to shake off the winter cobwebs with several sessions of arms and foot drill. We particularly enjoyed practising moving between two and three ranks.
It was so good to see everyone and to welcome so many new soldiers and civilians.
It’s still not too late to join us. Our next training day is 7th February in the East Riding, and you’d be welcome to come along and say hello.

What were the punishments meted out in the 33rd during the American War of Independence?

Watch the full documentary series on the YouTube channel.

And, don't forget we’re always on the lookout for new members - soldiers and civilians - and we promise you'll not be flogged?

We’re really looking forward to the weekend of the 4th and 5th July this year, when the Pattern will travel to the Palace of Versailles and take part in this spectacular event with over 500 fellow reenactors from Europe and America.

Marching into 2026!

Our calendar of events for this year is live.

From museum displays to living histories, and from immersive weekends to battle reenactments, there is something for everyone.

Why not come along and see us. We’re always delighted to say hello and talk about our passion for what we do.

Or, better still, why not join us? We are always delighted to welcome new members as soldiers, civilians, or as friends of the Pattern.

Happy New Year! 🎉

2025 has been a such a good year for us in the Pattern.

We have taken part in some great events – in Britain and North America, welcomed many new people into the Pattern family as both soldiers and civilians, visited places where the original 33rd marched - on both sides of the Atlantic, made many new friends and met up with many old ones, worked closely with other like-minded groups, and shared our journey with you.

Our highlights have included: Taking the field with the 33rd’s Colonel’s Company at Battle Road in April, and forging links in the US for future 250th events; walking in the footsteps of the regiment during its time in Ireland during 1774-5; taking part in the largest UK American War of Independence event at Moira Furnace in Leicestershire; delivering our first Georgian Fair at Chester Castle for English Heritage, seeing many of our soldiers join our civilians in delivering non-military impressions; another immersive event based in a period barn and taking long patrols in the beautiful Edale Valley, Derbyshire; and the release of our two part History Hit documentary, that has showcased the Pattern and introduced us to so many more friends and followers.

You could be part of next year’s review – you could join the Pattern as a soldier or civilian and take part in the great events we have lined up for 2026, which we’ll share in our next post.
