Someone's happy to have his leg splint off. This is the lad who I was encouraging to use his good leg so that he did not lose muscle mass whilst waiting for his nasty break to heal. It's been splinted since 11th May, and it's been a struggle. He didn't eat for 5 days, and it took 2 weeks for him to stand easily on his unsplinted leg. He can finally go into an aviary with splint removed. The bones have healed but it will take a bit longer to regain muscle and ligament strength. With legs, it takes time and perseverance to get them fit for release. Another broken legged one from Asda carpark has been checked. His wing also had multiple breaks but they have now healed. We will give him a few days to exercise his wing before checking his leg. Wings heal much quicker than legs and need regular physio to avoid the joints seizing up. Working on these older birds has to continue whilst caring for the babies that are coming in (one of those has a broken leg too!)
