MANUP?

MANUP? The adopted term of ‘MAN UP’ as we know it, needs to be challenged. The adopted term of 'MAN UP' as we know it, needs to be challenged.

Don't just brush yourself down & get on with it. Be brave, speak to someone, even if it's a mate. That's our focus; that's our mission. As a mental health awareness charity, we promote men's talking by displaying stories, having conversations, and discussing solutions in different ways.

Do men need more choice when it comes to mental health support?

We think they do.

One man might connect with James. Another might prefer Alex. Another might respond far better to somebody completely different.

And that’s fine.

We sometimes talk about mental health support as though finding the right person or approach should be simple. It isn’t.

So MANUP? is changing things.

We’re bringing in different therapists with different styles, alongside guest therapists, our MANUP? Talks and the work we’re already doing with men.

The idea is pretty simple: if a bloke says, “that’s not for me”, we want to be able to say, “OK, try this instead.”

And all of it remains free.

We’ve never charged a man for our sessions, our camping trips or the support we provide. The people who fundraise, donate, share our posts, comment and signpost men towards us are the reason we can keep doing that.

So, what do you think?

Would more choice make men more likely to actually engage with mental health support?

We spend a lot of time trying to help men once things have already gone badly wrong.

But what if we got to them earlier?

What if, instead of waiting until a man is struggling, angry, disconnected or making bad decisions, we actually listened to him when he was a boy?

Most of us know a young lad somewhere. A son, nephew, neighbour, someone at work, someone we see regularly.

Maybe sometimes it really is as simple as talking to him.

Not treating him like a problem. Not assuming we already know what he's thinking. Just speaking to him like a human being and actually listening to what he says.

Are we failing boys before they become men?

Dan and MANUP? trustee Jack get into this properly in our next full video.

And we want your thoughts.

Are we getting to boys early enough? What would you actually change?

Agree, disagree, think we're talking bo****ks? Tell us in the comments. We genuinely want to hear different views.

Now the boring admin bit...

There's no new full video from us this Friday. Yes, we know the Bank Holiday is technically Monday, but let's face it, half of you will have mentally clocked off by Friday lunchtime anyway.

So we're not wasting a good video on you.

This one will be out next week.

In the meantime, we've already got loads of MANUP? videos on our website, YouTube and Spotify if you need something to watch while you're definitely, absolutely working on Friday.

Have a good Bank Holiday.

We spend a lot of time asking why some men are angry, disconnected or don't trust the system.

Maybe we should be asking what happened when they were boys.

In this clip, Dan talks about trying to leave the care system, get ID and simply get a job. He was asking for help, but nobody seemed interested in *why* he didn't feel safe going back.

So here's the question:

Do we ignore boys, then blame the men?

“Men don’t talk.”

We hear it all the time.

But the reality is more complicated than that. Many men do try to talk. They just are not always heard, understood or met in a way that feels safe.

This MANUP? Talks session with Dr Robin Hadley looks at what is really going on beneath the silence. The fear of judgement. The risk of being seen as weak. The experience of opening up and it going nowhere.

For many men, staying quiet is not stubbornness. It is protection.

This session is about understanding those barriers properly. Not blaming men for not speaking, but learning how to listen in a way that actually works.

We stopped this man at Liverpool Street Station and asked him about mental health.

His answer? "Don’t surrender control"

Life can hit you with illness, pressure, expectations and things completely outside your control. His approach is to own the decisions that are still his to make.

Do you agree with him? Or are there times when letting go is actually the better option?

Tell us in the comments.

When a boy grows up believing he was the problem, does that ever really leave him?

Struggling to make friends. Feeling different. Being heavily medicated. Then, years later, looking back and believing that somehow you were responsible for what it did to your family.

But was he actually the problem?

How many men are still carrying blame for things they struggled with as boys?

COMMENT ‘FULL VIDEO’ and one of the MANUP? team will send you the link to watch the full conversation.

And tell us what you think: do experiences like this follow boys into adulthood?

MEN NEED TO FIND THEIR THING with Corrie Mustafa

What’s yours?

For Corrie Mustafa, it’s boxing. Not because boxing magically fixes your mental health, but because it gave him something he says he'd never really had before: purpose, fulfilment and direction.

And that raises a bigger question.

Do men actually need something that's theirs?

The gym. Football. Motorbikes. Fishing. Running. Making something. Being part of a team. Whatever it happens to be.

Corrie talks about growing up with ADHD, Asperger's and Tourette's, bullying, medication, supported living, homelessness and isolation before eventually finding the thing that gave him somewhere to put his energy and something to work towards.

So what’s your thing?

And if you haven't found it yet, what do you think is stopping you?

Tell us in the comments.

Sometimes it takes someone else to spot what you’re struggling to admit to yourself.

For him, it was his mum saying: “I’m really worried about you.”

That conversation made everything he’d been thinking suddenly feel real and ultimately led him to get help.

This is just a short clip from a much bigger conversation.

We’ve got tonnes of videos on our website, YouTube and Spotify, designed to help men understand themselves a little better by learning from others, including other men.
