I attended a updated briefing by the emergency climate briefing team recently about the impact of El Niño on the planet and in particular, our country!
It isn’t certain exactly what the impact is going to be but what we DO know is that we’ve never seen anything like it before. This combined with the extreme effects of climate change that we’ve faced this year mean that we need to be prepared this winter, and for the year ahead.

This is the Government report regarding El Niño.

If you want to find out more about what you can do to ensure that you and your family are best prepared and what support there is available locally, if we are hit with emergency situations…come along to our event on Wednesday 18th November at St Nicholas church hall on Bow St, Guisborough.
We will talking through different situations and how we can more resilient and safe.

Save money this Christmas, de-clutter and help reduce waste!
Bring along any toys that your children have grown out of and help yourself to something new -to-you…. Or simply come along and help yourself to free toys even if you’ve nothing to swap.
Please check our list above for what we can accept.
We expect lots of baby toys but would love to get toys for older kids too. Games consoles/computer games/electronic games all gladly accepted.

Be Ready: Could you manage for three days if essential services were disrupted?

The Government has launched Be Ready, a new website with simple advice to help households prepare for up to three days of disruption caused by everyday emergencies such as severe storms, flooding or power cuts.

Emergencies can affect things we rely on every day — including electricity, water, phones and the internet. A little preparation can make a big difference, helping people manage while emergency services focus on those who need urgent support.

At The Nest, we’ve also been working with local services and community hubs to explore how we can develop a network of safe spaces across our communities — something similar to the existing Warm Spaces network.

The idea is that, during an emergency or disruption, these community spaces could provide somewhere safe, warm or cool, connected and welcoming where people can access basic support, information, charging facilities and a friendly face.

We believe that building resilience isn’t just about what we can do as individuals — it’s about looking out for one another and making sure our communities are prepared to support each other when things go wrong.

Could you or someone you know need extra support?

If you might need additional help during a gas, electricity or water outage, you may be eligible for the Priority Services Register (PSR).

It’s a free service that lets utility companies know that you or someone in your household may need extra support during an emergency.

You may be eligible if you:
• are of pensionable age
• have a long-term health condition or disability
• have children under 5
• or meet other eligibility criteria.
