Looking forward to running this event for Swift Awarness Week. Our local Unstead Wetlands Nature Reserve is full of biodiversity thanks to all the volunteers that work so hard. On warm summer evenings the skies are alive with Swifts feeding off all the insects this habitat supplies. Two Swift Tower's have now gone up at this site this year, we are hoping they will attract Juvenile Swifts this year with a veiw to nesting there next year.

Looking forward to meeting the good people of Haslemere. A talk and then walk and talk will take place as part of Haslemere Walk Festival. We will be pairing up with Haslemere Biodiversity Group, and there new Swift Recovery Group. We will be teaching about Swifts and exploring the new Swift Streets that are being created in the town.

Swift Walk: An Evening with Haslemere’s Swifts

Join Haslemere Biodiversity for a summer evening walk celebrating one of our most extraordinary seasonal visitors: the swift. We begin at Haslemere Town Hall with a short introductory talk from Sarah of Guildford Swifts, who will share insights into swift behaviour, migration and the challenges these remarkable birds face.
We then head up the High Street and follow the historic footpath towards Church Meadow, pausing to explore how simple planting choices can boost flying insect populations, the essential food source for swifts. From there, we continue to St Bartholomew’s Churchyard to see some of the wildlife-friendly practices already underway.

Our route then climbs gently into High Lane, where we’ll take in sweeping views over the town and the Blackdown ridge to the South. On a fine evening this is a wonderful spot to watch swifts swooping and screaming overhead. We’ll complete the walk with a short loop through the beautiful Weycombe Woods before returning to the town centre.

If the weather is poor, the walk will still go ahead, but swifts will not be flying so we’ll show you the best places to return on a brighter evening. In the event of truly severe weather, the walk may be cancelled.

SWIFT AWARNESS WEEK

This weekend saw us running our Swift Stall at Shamley Green Village Fair. We had lots of interesting conversations with people. Many told me about how the village used to have Swifts and you could sit outside the pub overlooking the green and watch them swoop and scream across the cricket and village green We are planning a way to help the village bring back its Swifts . If you signed up for boxes last year, we will be coming to assess your houses for suitability this summer, we are a volunteers led organisation and we were out of the country last year, we unfortunately had some unavoidable delays, but we will forfill any orders and we thank you for your patience.
Thank you to Shamley Green Environment Group for inviting us along on such a beautiful day and meeting so many lovely people who want to help Swifts .

One in, one out ! Monday lunch time , 20°C ☀️
8 days now incubation of this very precious remaining one egg. (First two were kicked out of the nest in May, ? Fight, ? Hot weather.)
A few more Swifts arriving now, these will be the 2 to 3 year old's, looking for nests spaces for next year when they reach breeding age. Quite a few Bangers now being reported in other colonies around, but we have not seen that here just yet. Fairly quiet so far this year here. We have two breeding pairs on our house and at least 3 nest boxes occupied in our street , between 5 and 7 flying around of an evening doing screaming parties.

On the 7th of June Guildford Swift Project gave a talk on Swifts, together with Dr Tara Pirie from Surrey University on Hedgehogs to the Onslow Village Residents Association. The Hall filled up and people were extremly keen to here about how to help Swifts and how their Hedgehog project has been progressing in the village and at Surrey University which sits close to the village. I received many emails after the talk congratulating me on such an interesting talk, so we were very pleased indeed. 😄
