Autism is not a disease. We are not broken.

As an autistic person, I want to speak directly: pathologising autism is harmful and upsetting, especially for those of us diagnosed later in life — after years of trying to “fit in” and feeling like we don’t belong.

AUTISM IS NOT NEW!!! It predates the MMR vaccine and Tylenol shockingly enough and here's why:

The term autism was first used in 1911 by Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler, who observed differences in social communication in his patients. But descriptions of autistic traits go back even further — for example, in 1799, with Victor of Aveyron, the “wild boy of France.”

Autism is not an epidemic, nor is it a disease that needs fixing. It has always been part of human diversity — a natural variation in the way people think, communicate, and experience the world.

The only barriers we face are the ones created by communities, systems, and environments that are not set up to include us.

If the research community spent less time searching for causality and more time investing in meaningful engagement with autistic people, we could make inclusion feasible and productive, rather than a wishy-washy concept.

Much love, Annaliese.

Let’s celebrate and embrace neurodiversity.

What is Interest-led play?
Interest-led play is when children engage in activities driven by their own passions, curiosities, and strengths, rather than adult-directed or prescribed tasks. It promotes autonomy, freedom of choice, and self-direction, and focuses on what the young person finds motivating and enjoyable.
This session explores how interest-led play can be applied to support neurodivergent children and young people, including how it:
• Supports Emotional Wellbeing
• Encourages Social Connection
• Strengthens Identity and Self-Esteem
• Boosts Cognitive and Creative Development
• Facilitates Self-Regulation

About the course:
This one-day training session, designed and delivered by community interest company SEN TALK CIC, explores the decisive role of interest-led play in supporting the well-being of autistic and ADHD young people.
Participants will gain an understanding of how passions and special interests can be used as strengths-based tools to build confidence, foster social connections, support self-regulation, and promote a positive self-identity.

Through interactive workshops, case studies, and practical activities, attendees will:
• Learn what interest-led play is and why it matters.
• Explore how interests can act as protective factors for well-being.
• Develop strategies to create supportive, inclusive play environments.
• Practice ways of engaging with young people’s interests without taking over.
• Take away practical tools, resources, and action plans for embedding interest-led approaches in their own settings.

Today I was diagnosed with Autism. It wasn't a shock, but it has conjured mixed emotions for me including some sadness and feelings of being let down by the system. For me, this isn’t about labels — it’s about understanding.

Autism can present very differently in women and girls, and many of us go undiagnosed until adulthood. Getting this diagnosis is a huge step toward self-knowledge and acceptance.
