What is Interest-led play?
Interest-led play is when children engage in activities driven by their own passions, curiosities, and strengths, rather than adult-directed or prescribed tasks. It promotes autonomy, freedom of choice, and self-direction, and focuses on what the young person finds motivating and enjoyable.
This session explores how interest-led play can be applied to support neurodivergent children and young people, including how it:
• Supports Emotional Wellbeing
• Encourages Social Connection
• Strengthens Identity and Self-Esteem
• Boosts Cognitive and Creative Development
• Facilitates Self-Regulation
About the course:
This one-day training session, designed and delivered by community interest company SEN TALK CIC, explores the decisive role of interest-led play in supporting the well-being of autistic and ADHD young people.
Participants will gain an understanding of how passions and special interests can be used as strengths-based tools to build confidence, foster social connections, support self-regulation, and promote a positive self-identity.
Through interactive workshops, case studies, and practical activities, attendees will:
• Learn what interest-led play is and why it matters.
• Explore how interests can act as protective factors for well-being.
• Develop strategies to create supportive, inclusive play environments.
• Practice ways of engaging with young people’s interests without taking over.
• Take away practical tools, resources, and action plans for embedding interest-led approaches in their own settings.
