We were delighted to attend the launch of the Woking Community Grocery today. Jo (pictured below) and Katie, our Warmth Matters advisers, joined Liza, our Office Manager, for the event.

Run in partnership with Welcome Church, the grocery offers affordable food shops from just £5 per visit as well as wrap-around support courses. Our Warmth Matters team make regular visits to the Warm Welcome sessions at the church, so visitors to the grocery will be able to combine a shop with some energy saving advice too.

Congratulations to Olive Hogan from Ashford Helping Hands for her volunteer award. Olive has given her time to this good neighbour scheme for many years. Well done too, to Carol Sullivan for her volunteer work in the community including time spent helping the Stanwell Village Hall committee and SIGNS, Stanwell's good neighbour scheme.

We're delighted that these two wonderful women, whom we know through our support for Surrey's good neighbour schemes, have they recognition they deserve. 👏👏👏

⭐ Many congratulations to the seventeen volunteers who were recognised by the Spelthorne Civic Awards Trust for their voluntary service in the borough at a special ceremony on Tuesday 21 April ⭐

Parting is such sweet sorrow. This week we bade a fond farewell to our marketing volunteer, Tom Cross and our Advice & Guidance Officer - Gypsy, Roma and Travellers (Kingston) and Skills Impact Tutor for Surrey (and holder of the world's longest job title), Vicky Nash.

We're delighted that Tom has found employment since he began working with us almost three years ago and we wish him the very best as he considers future pathways. Tom has been a great help with putting together our newsletters, updating the website, assisting with events and much more. We will miss his lovely smile and his Christmas jumpers!

Vicky (Vix to all of us) joined us in 2021 while we were on lock down and met her colleagues and clients online initially. Last year, Vicky supported 165 clients in Kingston with information and advice on health and wellbeing, benefits, finances, and housing, as well as many others from the GRT community in Surrey with one-to-one tutoring to help develop functional maths and English skills. Sarah is one of the clients that Vicky has helped to learn to read, work out budgets and numbers and to support her son with his Maths homework. Sarah said: 'Thank you Vicky for helping me. I feel much more confident, independent and happier”.

We will miss Vix's laughter, her ability to remain calm and unflappable in any situation and her sense of humour and wish her the best as she starts a new life in Manchester.

Bridges and Beacons, a new “State of the Sector” report which highlights the vital role of Surrey’s voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector and offers practical policy solutions, was released today by the Centre for Britain and Europe at the University of Surrey, in partnership with Surrey Community Action at our launch event in Woking.

We commissioned the report to deepen the evidence base on the state of Surrey’s VCSE ecosystem and provide an expanded set of practical policy recommendations designed to strengthen collaboration between civil society, local government, and regional stakeholders.

You can find the report in our resource library (link in comments).
