Disability Africa

Disability Africa Ending the isolation that harms disabled children across Africa. Delivering life-changing services and transforming attitudes by harnessing the power of play.

Our Vision:
Disability Africa is working towards an inclusive global society in which the attitudes of the non-disabled are no longer barriers to the life-chances of those with impairments; where equity of opportunity exists for disabled people and societies recognise the benefits to all of Inclusive thinking and action.

We love to see the community coming together to support disabled children!

Students from Copperbelt University, Zambia, volunteered to donate blood to support the surgery of a child at our playscheme who lives with Cerebral Palsy and Sickle Cell Anemia. Due to ongoing low blood count, the child had been waiting more than a year for the operation.

Our incredible Medical Support Officer mobilised young students from across Ndola, raising awareness about inclusion and the importance of supporting disabled children and young people in the community.

We are so happy to share that the surgery was successfully completed, and the child is now recovering well!

Ever wondered who is behind our projects? Meet the team from Malanga-Kenya, who have been running our busiest and most remote project for over 8 years. In 2025 alone this team delivered 9626 playscheme visits!

1. Parent Support Coordinator Florence delivers family outreach visits and parents meetings, supporting families to engage with the project and protecting the rights of disabled children to play and learn. In this photo, she is at the cassava plantation which the parents network have acquired together.

2. Project Coordinator John Safari leads the operations and finances of the project, whilst Community Co-ordinator Japhet represents the project in community forums and builds partnerships.

3. Medical Support Officer and trained physiotherapist Grace delivers daily physiotherapy at each playscheme and home visits to provide physiotherapy and coordinate medical support.

3. The play team are the heart of our projects and deliver daily play activities, care and support for the children. Many playworkers are young adults with impairments, who used to attend the playschemes themselves!

4. Tuktuk driver Carlson Safari works extremely hard ferrying children across the community to their PlayStation.

A massive congratulations to Ameya, Isabelle, Gunnion, Rohan and Gnaan โ€” a group of Year 12 students from the Isle of Man โ€” who won the One World Charity Competition, a programme that encourages young people to raise awareness of global issues and support organizations making real impact.

Facing tough competition, their campaign for Disability Africa came out on top, raising an incredible ยฃ1,500 for our projects.

A huge thank you to the team for joining our Movement for Inclusion, and choosing to represent Disability Africa.

A mother of a disabled child who attends our newest project the Rwamwanja Inclusion Project in Uganda , shares her observations of some of the way that engaging in play over the last four months has already helped her young child to develop.

Many people consider that children with impairments are difficult and expensive to include , because they need 'specialist' services. This means that disabled young people are almost always left behind. They are denied access to social spaces, excluded from development projects and isolated from their community.

But for any child, a safe and nurturing environment that encourages them to play, explore and learn is sometimes all that is needed to start to make progress in their development. Thatโ€™s what our playschemes are about โ€” creating inclusive spaces where every child has the chance to grow.

Twenty-five previously excluded children are now enjoying play activities three days a week at the playhub. The team is delivering a range of fun and educational activities, such as making playdough, building with blocks, drawing numbers and letters, and group music and dance. They are also helping children develop self-care skills, such as communicating when they need to use the toilet. For many, this is their first time spending time outside the home, but they are adjusting well.

Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, in Kamwenge District, western Uganda, is home to over 113,000 refugees, most of whom fled conflict in the Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This project is delivered in partnership with Tomorrow Vijana, a refugee-led organization working to promote inclusion and reduce stigma against disability in the settlement.

The team closes each week with music and dance, bringing smiles to every childโ€™s face. Project Coordinator Caroline explains, โ€œGroup music and dance activities promote sharing, cooperation, and bonding, which build emotional expression, confidence, and physical development.โ€

Our amazing play-leader Yaya uses purposeful play to support with childrenโ€™s development in The Gambia. In this video, he plays with M to help build her core strength, stability and flexibility, while also practising holding focus and exchanging meaningful interaction.

Every child deserves joy, connection and the chance to grow. Without inclusion, disabled children are often left isolated, missing out on these nurturing interactions, and stunting their development and wellbeing.

A heartfelt ๐—ง๐—›๐—”๐—ก๐—ž-๐—ฌ๐—ข๐—จ to everyone who donated, liked/shared our campaigns, or supported us in any way in 2025.

Because of you, more children at risk of isolation could access our play projects โ€” safe spaces to play, learn, and receive therapeutic support. Together, weโ€™ve grown our reach with more play days, a new project in Rwamwanja, Uganda, and stronger local partnerships, helping fight the exclusion that harms disabled young people.

Looking forward to 2026, we are so excited to be launching our new project in Eswatini, expanding existing projects further, and working with our partners to empower communities for change.

Keep an eye on our progress and ways to get involved this year. We canโ€™t do it without you!
