Don't wait for the New Year to start afresh. If you're in need of a new hobby, or want to return to one you've dropped, look no further Age UK Surrey's Men in Sheds.

Based at Merrist Wood College in Worplesdon, Guildford, the group meets Tuesday to Friday, with morning and afternoon sessions available. Members work on woodworking projects in a well-equipped workshop, but just as importantly, they enjoy great company, friendly banter, and a real sense of purpose.

As Catherine Hodgson, our CEO, puts it: "Retirement creates a void — lone men are less likely to engage in social activities than women." Men in Sheds is designed to change that.

💛 It's World Mental Health Day, and a reminder that looking after our mental wellbeing matters at every age.

For many older people, loneliness and isolation can take a real toll on how they feel. At Age UK Surrey, we're here to help, with friendly faces and support across the county:
☎️ Check in and Chat: regular friendly phone calls from a caring volunteer
☕ Tea and Chat groups, Café Culture, Carer Support Groups and activities at the Clockhouse Community Centre
🚶 Go50 Walks and Men in Sheds: fresh air, fun and friendship
🧘 Better Balance classes to keep body and mind active

Sometimes a chat, a cup of tea or a walk with someone who cares makes all the difference. 🌿

🌿🎨 A little pause for creativity, calm and colour.

On 14th September, a group of our wonderful Age UK Surrey volunteers spent a morning at RHS Garden Wisley learning botanical art with a visiting artist, Agathe Montagnon illustration.

Surrounded by plants, pencils and paintbrushes, everyone slowed down, looked closely at the natural world and found a moment of calm. 💛

The workshop is made possible by the Dawn Jolliffe Botanical Art Bursary Fund, generously funded by the Jolliffe family in memory of Dawn, who loved botanical art. It's organised by the RHS Communities' Network and Programmes team, and its aim is to show how drawing and painting can help us connect with nature and support wellbeing.

It also fits one of the NHS's 5 Ways to Wellbeing: Give. Our volunteers give so much to older people across Surrey, and we hope this was a small way of giving something back. 🌸

Thank you to the Jolliffe family, the RHS team at Wisley, Agathe Montagnon, and every one of our volunteers who joined us.

🌈 170 people. One very colourful Sunday. 💛

Thank you to everyone who ran, walked, laughed and got covered in colour with us at Loseley Park on Grandparents' Day!

From the first burst of colour to the final photo in the event village, it was a joy to watch families and friends of all ages celebrate together. A big thank you to Prior's Field School Choir for filling the morning with such beautiful singing and Lindsay for her energetic and fun warm-up🎶

How often do you put off thinking or looking at your finances, even when you know you shouldn't? On World Financial Planning Day, we're here to remind you that conversations about finances doesn't need to be daunting.

Our Information and Advice team can help you discover ways to make your money go further. In Ms M's case, she contacted us about a Blue Badge application, but also received advice on applying for an Attendance Allowance.

Ms M told us that her advisor "told me I could be eligible to receive Attendance Allowance which I hadn’t even considered before she mentioned it. She helped me to apply and I’m over the moon that I’ve got it, and it has come at a very helpful time... She was really helpful and I’m very grateful."

Our Information and Advice service is completely free and whether it's assistance with benefits, helping with housing needs, or pointing you in the right direction, our friendly team are here to assist you.
