Sunday's Coffee Club left me with a lot to think about.

Professor Jonathan Morris joined us for a morning exploring coffee's journey from the forests of Ethiopia to the espresso bars of Italy.

We tasted coffee. We looked at photographs from his recent trip to Ethiopia. We talked about colonialism, trade, culture, and the people behind what ends up in our cups.

But what stayed with me most wasn't the history itself.

It was what happened around the table.
Questions sparked more questions.
People shared their own experiences.

A roaster travelled from Portsmouth to join us and spoke about how deeply moved he'd been by one of Jonathan's podcast episodes exploring the hidden human stories behind coffee.

Others brought their own perspectives and curiosities.
The conversation kept growing.

Long after the session had officially ended, people were still sitting together talking.

Looking through my phone afterwards, I realised I'd hardly taken any photographs.

Not because there wasn't anything worth capturing.

Because I was too busy listening.

Several people told me afterwards that they felt the Coffee Club was becoming something special.

I'll admit, hearing that touched me.

What I've been hoping to create here isn't simply a series of talks about coffee.

It's a place where people can come together, share ideas, learn something new, and leave feeling a little more connected than when they arrived.

Sunday felt like one of those mornings.

Thank you, Jonathan.

And thank you to everyone who came, listened, questioned, contributed, and stayed a little longer.

Big love to New House Art Space & Gallery and Frida’s Coffee House for giving us the perfect space to do this.

I'm very grateful we're building this together. ☕️

A few months ago, I sent an email to a coffee historian whose podcast I enjoyed, asking whether he'd ever consider joining us in Guildford.

To my delight, he said yes.

On Sunday 26 July, Guildford Coffee Club is welcoming Professor Jonathan Morris — one of the world's leading coffee historians — for a morning of stories, conversation, and coffee tasting.

Jonathan has recently returned from Ethiopia, and together we'll explore coffee's journey from its origins there through trade, empire, culture, and the rise of espresso.

It's not a lecture — more a shared conversation around a fascinating subject, with a few surprises along the way.

📅 Sunday 26 July, 11:00–13:00
📍 New House Art Space, Fays Passage, Guildford

This morning I sat in a room with a few familiar faces and three people I was meeting for the very first time — and somehow we ended up laughing together, learning from each other, and talking about everything from air conditioning (it's hot, we had to) to AI, art history, and Surrey council policies.

Steven brought his stovetop espresso maker and gave us a little demonstration. I didn't see that coming.

I even found myself sharing personal stories. There was something about the room that made it feel safe to do that.

I left feeling energised and genuinely wanting to see these people again. Maybe that's just the host in me — but I hope it wasn't only me who felt that.

Our prize draw winner Greg couldn't make it today — his beans are waiting for him at Frida's with a note. You know who you are. ☕ A big thank you to for kindly donating the prize.

And as always, thank you to and for this cosy little corner — there's something about those sofas that makes people want to stay longer. ☕🛋️

Next gathering: 26 July — we're welcoming , one of the world's leading coffee historians and author of Coffee: A Global History, translated into nine languages. His TED-Ed lesson How Humanity Got Hooked on Coffee has been watched over 3 million times. Come and find out why. 👀 More details soon.

The Guildford Coffee Club is a monthly gathering for people who love coffee — or are just curious about it. After the festival, after the workshops, after all the tastings — this Sunday I just want to sit down and talk.

About coffee, yes. But also about whatever's on your mind.

That's always been the point really. Coffee is just the reason we gather. The conversations that follow are something else entirely.

This Sunday at , New House Art Space, Guildford. Free, no booking, no agenda. 11am–1pm.
Come as you are. ☕

The festival is done — but coffee is still very much on my mind.

My birthday present this year was 's Coffeehouse Tour through the City of London — and it was fantastic. So much detail, so much history packed into one walk.

We even got to try coffee brewed from an original 17th-century recipe. Let's just say… it was an experience. Apparently the original included cat urine. He left that part out. Probably wise. ☕

Walking past the plaques of coffee houses that shaped the modern world — all of it started between strangers, over a cup. That's still what this is about.

Turns out I'm not the only one obsessed with coffee history. This July, the Coffee Club welcomes a proper coffee historian. More very soon.

At the beginning of this year, this was just an idea.

On Sunday, it became reality — and it was more than I could have hoped for.
The conversations, the coffee, and the people who stopped, stayed, and connected with complete strangers. That's what I wanted. That's what happened.

Thank you to everyone who came, hosted, volunteered, and helped make the first Guildford Coffee Festival what it was.
This is just the beginning. ☕

Last Saturday I went to an Africa Day celebration. I didn't know what to expect — and I ended up sitting in a police car playing the horn. Not what I planned for a Thursday afternoon.

But that's exactly the kind of community ACISS creates. The African Community in Surrey & Sussex has been bringing people together since 2021 — warmth, connection, a genuine sense of belonging for Africans living across Surrey and Sussex. There's something we can all learn from the way they do community.

They'll be in the market hall on Sunday. Come and say hello.
