What a great couple days at the Surrey Hills Enterprises Country Fair at Merrist Wood this weekend, where we spoke to 100s of visitors about all things archaeology in Surrey - thanks so much to the team for their support

Visitors will be pleased that the archaeological displays at Clacket Lane service station (produced by Digging Surrey's Past following excavation in 1992) are now back in place, with the artefacts having been cleaned and repaired, and a few extra added, along with new labels and stands. Thanks to Roadchef, the cases have been refurbished - repaired, repainted and cleaned, with new lighting installed and sand for the medieval sherds on the lower shelf replaced. The whole effect is to make the displays brighter and much more attractive, so please do be sure to (re)visit!

This weekend's test pitting in Chaldon was very successful with a total of 7 pits opened and interesting finds in all. The team had hoped to find evidence of medieval activity, but also found Roman and Saxon pottery. The open afternoon on Saturday 2 May attracted many people from Chaldon who came to view the archaeology and find out more about the Society, tours of the house and tea and cake also available.

Pit 2, west of the current house, revealed walls and a chalk surface with underlying flints, while pit 6 had a packed flint layer, under which was a thick layer of massive flint nodules. A hazard of digging a test pit is that unexpected features can be found including two pipes in pit 3. A volunteer from pit 4 is holding a Roman rim. This pit went down to 70cm and many Roman sherds were found in the last two spits.

The Society’s ‘Roman Roads Group’, led by Chris Gibson and several local volunteers, have been continuing their exploration of sections of Roman road across the county, including the area around Rapsley Roman villa and Margary Roman road 151. Recently they have moved to a newly excavated deviation of Stane Street, immediately south of Ockley, where - following extensive bramble clearance - investigations included evidence of the possible terrace cut into the hillside so that Stane Street could deviate along a more gentle slope.

A good day yesterday for our Medieval Pottery Group, who identified and recorded sherds from the Lowther Collection at the Abinger Research Centre. The group regularly meets on alternate Sundays at Abinger and would love more people to join. Why not come for a taster session? No experience is necessary, only a fascination with the past. Please contact Emma via [email protected] if interested.

The two lithics groups of the Society assess collections of lithic artefacts, whether in museums or in private collections. This often leads on to research projects, and of course helps in training those new to this fascinating area of archaeology, who have joined our lithics group. If you have a collection or are aware of a lithics collection that you believe would be a good subject for the group, do get in touch with us via [email protected].
