Competitive obedience classes

Surrey DTS We train on Thursday nights from 7.00pm to 9.pm .

Surrey Dog Training society started as an independent club in January 1955. Like many other long-established training groups it was originally a branch of ASPADS (Associated Sheep, Police and Army Dog Societies) which in turn had grown out of wartime use of german shepherd dogs (alsatians) for guarding and searching etc. ASPADS ran working trial competitions through various branches all over the c

ountry from 1924. Surrey decided to go independent in 1955 so that the subscriptions of the pet owners who formed the majority at its obedience classes would be used directly for their benefit. But the competitive aspect of dog training which dominated ASPADS was not lost by this change. Surrey DTS has been running working trials since 1957 and is still organising two open and two championship trials every year. In 1957 the breeds placed in the competition were the Labrador, the GSD, the Great Dane, the Border Collie/Working Sheepdog, the Poodle, and the Golden Retriever. Now the placed breeds often include the Weimeraner, the Vizla, the Rottweiler, Belgian Shepherds, and the Springer Spaniel, as well as enthusiasts with, for example, a Sheltie, Border Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier,Gordon Setter, Schnauzer, or Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever. Surrey added to its competitive diary in 1959 when it ran its first Championship Obedience Show, which still features every year in June although it has long outgrown the early homes at Tillingbourne School and Guildford & Godalming Rugby Club. When agility started some thirty years ago the Society also embraced that activity, and runs an open agility show in the summer. The Society remains a nucleus in West Surrey for people who want to take part in organised group activities with their pets. It has survived over fifty years thanks to the voluntary efforts of dedicated members and it is to be hoped that it will still be there in 2055! This is the face book page of the Surrey DTS Obedience section. Are classes are run by our group of volunteer trainers , who have a wealth of knowledge and years of expriace of working with dogs. They attend courses, workshops and seminars regularly to keep up with all aspects of modern training ideas and techniques . We are very proud to say that we are modern , progressive ethical trainers using reward based training and force free methods of training. Our classes are designed to prepare you for competitive obedience. we are happy to help at all levels from those who have never competed to those who just want to brush up on their skills for the higher classes. http://www.surreydogtrainingsociety.org.uk/

(We would ask that if you do not get a reply straight away, please bare with us . All are members and trainers have jobs , and Surrey DTS is run by people who also work and have families. We will get back to you asap , but it might take a few days!)

🐾 Exploring the countryside with your dog? Make every walk safe, enjoyable and respectful for everyone.

The Countryside Code helps us protect the beautiful spaces we love while ensuring dogs, wildlife, livestock and other visitors can all enjoy them safely.

Remember to:
✅ Keep your dog under control and in sight
✅ Use a lead where livestock, wildlife or local signage requires it
✅ Pick up after your dog and dispose of waste responsibly
✅ Follow local signs and stay on marked paths where appropriate
✅ Respect landowners, residents and fellow countryside users

A little consideration goes a long way in protecting access to our wonderful countryside for future generations.

Take a moment to familiarise yourself with the Countryside Code before your next adventure.

🌿 Respect Everyone
🌿 Protect the Environment
🌿 Enjoy the Outdoors

🐾 Did you know Surrey County Council has a Dog Walkers’ Code of Conduct, backed by Surrey Wildlife Trust?

Whether you’re out for a daily stroll or exploring somewhere new, we all have a role to play in protecting the countryside, wildlife, livestock and other people enjoying these beautiful spaces.

The Code of Conduct highlights some simple but important reminders:

🐕 Keep dogs under control and within sight
🐑 Respect livestock and local wildlife
🌿 Keep paws on paths, especially during ground-nesting bird season
💩 Always pick up and dispose of dog waste responsibly
🦮 Keep your dog safe with ID, a lead and fresh drinking water
🚶 Follow local signs and the Countryside Code

By following these guidelines, we can help ensure Surrey’s countryside remains safe, welcoming and thriving for everyone.

At Surrey Dog Training Society, we’re proud to support responsible dog ownership and encourage everyone to enjoy the countryside respectfully.

✨🐩 Poodles: More Than Just a Pretty Face 🏆✨

Think poodles are all about fancy haircuts and show rings? Think again! 👀

Behind those iconic curls is one of the most versatile and athletic dog breeds around. Originally bred as water retrievers, poodles were designed to work — and they still love having a job to do. 💪💦

🐾 Highly intelligent and eager to learn
🐾 Fast, agile, and incredibly athletic
🐾 Strong problem-solvers with excellent focus
🐾 Natural team players who love working with their humans

From agility and rally to scent work, flyball, obedience, dock diving, and swimming, poodles excel in almost every dog sport they try. 🎾🏃‍♀️🌊

What makes them so special? They combine enthusiasm and drive with the ability to stay focused and responsive when it matters most. That balance is a dream for any sports dog owner. ⚡

So the next time someone dismisses poodles as just a show breed, remind them that under those curls is a hardworking athlete ready to take on any challenge. 🌟🐩❤️

Who loves watching poodles show off their sporting talents? 👇

🐾 A little celebration for our scent work stars! 🐾

We wanted to take a moment to shine a spotlight on the wonderful dogs in our scent work classes, who are all doing brilliantly and making us incredibly proud. 🌟

Looking through these photos, one thing stands out more than anything else: scent work really is for every dog.

Of course, we have breeds that are famous for their nose work skills – gundogs, Hovawarts and Border Collies who seem born to sniff! But alongside them are Tibetan Terriers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Lurchers, Poodle mixes, and plenty of other wonderful dogs who have discovered just how much they love the game.

The beauty of scent work isn’t about breed, age, size or background. It’s about giving dogs the chance to use their natural instincts, build confidence, solve problems and have fun. And every week we’re reminded that when given the opportunity, dogs of all shapes and sizes can absolutely shine. ✨

Watching these dogs grow in confidence, enthusiasm and skill has been a joy, and we’re so proud of every single one of them. 🐶❤️

Because at the end of the day, scent work doesn’t belong to a particular breed…

It belongs to every dog.

🐾✨ Friday Training Room Report! ✨🐾

What a fantastic evening of scent work with our very own scent-work superstar, the wonderful “Aunty” Alison Edwards! 🐶👃

Our first class was packed with dogs either finding their paws in scent work or building on skills they’ve already learned. We kicked off with linear searches, focusing on indications and really listening to what our dogs were telling us. We then moved on to a variety of different searches, continuing to sharpen our handling skills and learn to read each dog’s unique indication. Every team did brilliantly, and it’s always fascinating to see the different ways our dogs communicate when they’ve found the scent! 🐕💨

The second class started with the same linear pipe search, but this time using gun oil. Safe to say we had some very enthusiastic dogs ready to get to work! 😆 Handlers worked hard to encourage calm, sustained indications, and the progress was fantastic to see.

Next up was a scent board search laid flat on the floor so the dogs could walk across it, followed by one of Alison’s sneaky challenges on the hall stage! 🤫 She hid the scents without telling us where they were—or even how many there were to find! The dogs rose to the challenge and had a great time hunting them out.

We rounded off the evening with active retrieves, which produced some hilarious moments! 🎾 Dandy the Border Collie absolutely smashed it from the start, while Connie the Lurcher decided her catnip llama was far too precious to hand over, proudly parading around the hall with it instead! 😂

It’s amazing how quickly 45 minutes flies by when you’re having so much fun!

As always, the combination of a supportive instructor and an encouraging group of handlers made for a brilliant evening. We left with very happy, very tired dogs… and handlers too! 🐾❤️

🏆 Dogs of the Night 🏆

⭐ Jeri – for working incredibly hard and showing fantastic improvement.

⭐ Dandy – for being completely on the ball and an absolute joy to watch.

⭐ Stanley – our adorable Hovawart puppy, who proved that being the cutest distraction is a talent in itself! 🥰

A huge thank you to Alison Edwards for delivering another epic UK Sniffer Dogs class. We can’t wait for the next one! 🐕👃✨

🐾✨ Scent work is SO much more than teaching dogs to find an odour!

At UK Sniffer Dogs, every search is an adventure! Created by Jamie Pound, this reward-based approach taps into your dog’s incredible natural instincts while building confidence, focus, and resilience along the way. 🐶💛

Dogs learn to:
✨ Associate scent with amazing rewards
✨ Search independently and confidently
✨ Give a calm freeze indication at source
✨ Work through puzzles, challenges, and new environments

The best part? It’s for EVERY dog! 🙌

🐾 Nervous dogs
🐾 Reactive dogs
🐾 Busy brains
🐾 Senior dogs
🐾 High-energy dogs

Using their nose helps dogs slow down, think, focus, and channel their energy in a positive way. It’s not just a sport—it’s enrichment, mental stimulation, confidence building, and FUN all rolled into one!

Watching a dog light up when they solve a scent puzzle is pure magic. ✨🐕

“The power of nosework is endless.” ❤️

Why Hovawarts Make Amazing Dog Sport Partners 🐾💪

Looking for a dog that can keep up with your active lifestyle and excel in dog sports? Meet the Hovawart!

✨ Why they shine:
🐕 Highly intelligent and eager to learn
🏃 Athletic, agile, and full of stamina
🤝 Strong bond with their handler
🧠 Excellent problem-solvers
❤️ Loyal companions on and off the field

🏅 Activities they often excel in:
• Obedience
• Rally Obedience
• Tracking & Scent Work
• Search & Rescue
• Canicross

One of the best things about Hovawarts is their versatility. They can work hard in training and competition, then settle down and relax with their family at home.

At our club, our Chairwoman, Paula, and our Scentwork Trainer, Alison, both own Hovawarts and regularly work them in classes. It’s wonderful to watch these impressive dogs in action, showcasing their intelligence, enthusiasm, and working ability. Despite their strong working instincts, they’re also incredibly affectionate and absolutely love a good cuddle! ❤️🐾

⚠️ Keep in mind: Hovawarts mature slowly and need consistent training, patience, and early socialization. The investment pays off with a capable and devoted partner.
