Ireland’s Best Kept Town Competition 2026

Groomsport and Donaghadee were recently recognised among the best-kept places on the island of Ireland, both reaching the final of the Ireland’s Best Kept Town Competition 2026 in the Small Town category.

At the awards ceremony held in Belfast earlier in the summer, Groomsport was announced as the winner of the Ireland’s Best Kept Small Town award, an achievement that celebrates the dedication of local volunteers, community groups and residents who work year-round to enhance and maintain their town.

The competition recognises excellence in areas such as cleanliness, presentation of public spaces, appearance of buildings and care for the natural environment.

Both Groomsport and Donaghadee should be immensely proud of reaching the final stage of this prestigious all-island competition, showcasing the strong community spirit that exists across our local area.

Congratulations to all all involved on this well-deserved success.

An update on the save the trees petition

We have brought the Department of Infastructure to the discussion table. Their plans are suspended subject to an independant Arboricultural review and then discussions around the report before decisions are agreed. Save our street trees.

Today we met with DFI, Alan and David Chambers, and Council.
A really constructive meeting with DFI in listening and I believe understanding mode. A full Arboricultural report commissioned with expert known for wanting trees to be kept in situ.
We will be given the report and will have further meetings to discuss its recommendations. No final decisions to be made until after that meeting.
I feel more optimistic that an outcome will be acceptable to most of us.

A good and productive meeting with council and David Chambers about the American Independance celebration 5 rowans. Agreed that the location is inappropriate. The trees will go to a location outside of Groomsport.

Really pleased DFI meeting GVA soon.
I have been given the starting report that started this. We are shocked at the title and complete lack of detail. No understanding of arboriculture and good cultivare choises. DFI now seeking arboricultiral report. HOW can we have recieved letters saying our trees are to be felled as preferred option with nothing to back it up other than a really pathetic report

The GVA finally have a meeting organised with the DFI. We will be joined by David and Alan Chambers. For the first time since our first correspondance with DFI there is a feeling of optimism. Momentum through email, petition and publicity. Thanks everyone.

Also hope by the start of next week the other tree issue will be resolved.
