🌍📻 1ST NEW WALTHAM GOES GLOBAL – JOTA-JOTI 2026! ⛺⚜️

What a weekend! Our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have been busy exploring, learning, making new friends and connecting with the worldwide Scouting community at Humberside Scouts’ JOTA-JOTI Weekender! With 31 young people joining us for either the full weekend camp or Saturday’s day experience, there was certainly no shortage of adventure!

📻 On the airwaves! Exploring amateur radio, Morse code and different ways of communicating, including some brilliant teamwork and blindfolded challenges.

🌍 Going global! Connecting with Scouts around the world through Jamboree on the Internet, including a conversation with a Scout in South Africa 🇿🇦 and a video call with fellow Scouts at Gilwell Park – where we naturally had to ask the important questions about cod, haddock and gravy on chips! 😂

🎨 Getting creative! From soap etching and wood-burning personalised coasters to Morse code bracelets, construction challenges and plenty of hands-on activities.

🏹 Trying something new! Archery, r***e shooting, Robot Wars and outdoor challenges gave our young people even more opportunities to develop their confidence and learn new skills.

🔥 Making memories! Camping under the stars (and some rather chilly October skies! 🥶), cooking together, making new friends and joining other Scout groups around the campfire for songs, laughter and s’mores.

For some of our young people, this was their very first camping experience, while others were seasoned campers. Seeing them support one another, embrace new challenges and make the most of every opportunity was what made the weekend so special. 👏 A huge thank you to Humberside Scouts and everyone involved in organising and delivering such a varied programme of activities from everyone at 1st New Waltham - Grimsby - Squirrel, Beaver, Cub and Scout Group. It’s fantastic to see opportunities like this bringing young people from further across the County together. And, of course, thank you to our own wonderful adult volunteers, who gave up their time to make sure our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts could be part of the adventure.

🎄🎁 CAN YOU HELP MAKE OUR JINGLEBELL RAFFLE AMAZING AGAIN? 🎁🎄

Every year, our 1st New Waltham Scouts Jingle-Bell Christmas Fayre 2026 raffle is absolutely fantastic, and that’s all thanks to the incredible generosity of our local community and businesses! Well… it’s that time of year again, and we’re reaching out to our wonderful community supporters! We’re looking for raffle prize donations, big or small, to help us raise much-needed funds for our Scout Group and the 124 young people we support. If you or your business could spare a prize, voucher or gift, we would be incredibly grateful. Every little bit really does make a difference!

Time to dust off our creative skills, dig out the baking tins and give our fantastic festive games their annual outing! 🎨🧁🎯 Our Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are getting ready for our Scouts Jingle-Bell Christmas Fayre 2026 and we’d love our local community to join us!

💡 Otter’s Enterprise Challenge…. small investment, big ideas! 💚

What happens when you give 50 young people £5 each and encourage them to develop their own fundraising idea? A wonderful mix of creativity, enthusiasm and enterprise! Our challenge is helping raise funds for our Lochgoilhead adventure in 2027, but its purpose goes much further. It’s about building confidence, initiative and resilience, while learning about the value of money, costs, profit and reinvesting to help an idea grow. It’s about the skills gained along the way, rather than who raises the most. From baking bread and cakes to selling sweetie cones, handmade crafts and artwork, the ideas have been fantastic. Some even have silent partners and investors to pay dividends to!

The best part has been listening to our young people excitedly share their ideas and progress at our section meetings. I could never have imagined all the lightbulb moments this challenge would spark, but it’s been amazing to watch them unfold. 💡With some already attending fayres, school fetes and setting up pop-up shops, we can’t wait to see how their enterprises develop before our end-of-January deadline. If you spot them out in the community, stop for a chat, they have plenty to share about their experience! 😊

🔥🦫 Campfires, S’mores & Skills for Life! 🦫🔥

There’s something special about gathering around a campfire, and this week our 1st New Waltham Beavers got stuck into a brilliant evening of outdoor adventure! Our young people learnt how to collect suitable firewood, discovered the difference between tinder, kindling and fuel, and explored how to stay safe around a campfire. With guidance from our leaders, they even helped build and light the fire! 🔥👏

Of course, all that hard work deserved a little reward… toasted marshmallows, delicious s’mores and plenty of sticky smiles! Add in some traditional campfire songs, laughter and friendship, and you’ve got a pretty perfect Beaver evening! 🎶

These are the moments that make Scouting so special. Young people getting outdoors, trying something new, building confidence and learning practical Skills for Life, all while having a brilliant time with their friends.

💚 WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY ~ A place to belong. ⚜️

Sometimes, the most important thing a young person takes away from Scouts isn’t a badge, a new skill or even an incredible adventure. It’s the feeling that they belong. A place where they can be themselves. Where friendships are made, confidence grows and everyone has something to contribute. A place where it’s okay to get things wrong, to try again, to ask for help or simply to have a bad day.

At 1st New Waltham Scouts, we see so much more than camping, climbing, campfires and muddy boots.
•We see friendships forming between young people who might never otherwise have met.
•We see young people encouraging each other when something feels difficult.
•We see quiet confidence growing as someone discovers they can do something they never thought possible.
•And we see volunteers giving their time, offering encouragement, listening and helping young people feel valued.

Scouting won’t solve every challenge a young person faces, and we wouldn’t pretend that it does. But having somewhere to go, people who care and opportunities to laugh, explore and feel part of something can make a real difference. Because sometimes, simply knowing you’ve got somewhere you belong means more than we realise.

On World Mental Health Day, we’re celebrating the friendships, connections and sense of belonging that make Scouting so special. And we’d love to hear from you…

🥕🥒 HEALTHY EATING, HAPPY CUBS & SKILLS FOR LIFE! 🍎💚

Another week, another opportunity for our Cubs to learn something new!

This week, our Cubs explored healthy eating through games, discussions and some hands-on food preparation. 🥦🍽️ They learned about different food groups, making healthier choices and how the way we prepare our food can make a difference. Then it was time to get stuck in! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

Our young people made their very own homemade hummus, chopped fresh carrots and cucumber, and prepared pitta bread to enjoy together. 🥕🥒🥙 It’s lovely to see our Cubs developing practical everyday skills, growing in confidence and being encouraged to try new foods, all while having fun with their friends!

That’s what Scouting in our community is all about! Giving young people opportunities to learn, discover new interests and develop those all-important Skills for Life. Well done Cubs, and thank you to our brilliant volunteers and parent helpers who make these experiences possible!

🌊⚜️ WATER SAFETY — SKILLS THAT COULD SAVE A LIFE ⚜️🌊

Water activities are a fantastic part of Scouting, but knowing how to enjoy the water safely is just as important. This week, our Scouts explored water safety around activities such as paddleboarding and canoeing. 🛶 They discussed cold water shock, the importance of correct clothing and safety equipment, and how to keep themselves and others safe. It was brilliant to see how much they already knew and the confidence they showed sharing their ideas. 🙌

We want our Scouts to embrace adventure, but also understand risk and make safe choices, water safety really is a Skill for Life. 💚

It might only be the beginning of October, but we’re already looking forward to bringing our whole Scout Group together for an evening of festive fun!
